Basically I have the artistic ability of a remote control LOL I have always wanted to learn how to write in a pretty way. I’ve tried official classic calligraphy and that was a nightmare. But then I started seeing a lot of stuff on Instagram and online about hand lettering and a new way of doing calligraphy. So my interest was definitely piqued. After quite a bit of research I found this book online and immediately bought it. I think this book is good for somebody like myself. A beginner with or without artistic talent. I bought myself a “Tombow beginNer “ Kit with pen, pencil, eraser, etc. I also got myself a notebook that I could practice in. I must say I became particularly motivated after realizing I could do this. While I’m not going to post any images because nobody needs to laugh that hard. LOL I believe with some practice I can be kind of good. I could make pretty envelopes, make signs, etc. etc. goodness knows I will never have a career or 1 million followers on Instagram for my lettering skills, but it’s nice to learn something new and put the creative side of my brain to work. If you want to learn about lettering and hand calligraphy, amp up the way you write/draw your letters, further your skills, etc. this book is quite useful. If you are more advanced you might not get as much out of it. It may be a tad bit of a disappointment if you are definitely advanced/more creative than somebody like me LOL But it would definitely make a good gift for somebody who has shown interest in lettering/calligraphy. I was going to buy the e-book version but for something like this I really like having the book right there in front of me. Plus there is practice space in the book. After I’ve used up that space I go onto my grid styled black-and-white hard covered notebook. I like keeping everything in one notebook so as to watch my progression or regression if I wait too long in between practice sessions. So practice practice practice that’s the only way to make it to Carnegie Hall and that’s the only way to become a lettering guru! This company also puts out other books that are quite awesome

I just got this book today and I’ve been having so much fun!! I think this book is an amazing deal for just $7! I haven’t gotten my brush pens yet so I’ve just been doing simple hand lettering with a mechanical pencil. Still super fun! Hat I recommend, and I didn’t do sadly, is to take pictures of the pages before you start writing in them or scan them so you can print them out and use them again if you want. Personally I forgot to do this but I don’t think it’s 100% necessary anyway because you can always get an extra notebook and trace! Anyway, am loving this book so far!

This book...I mean, you look at it and think, how hard can this be to convey? But it does not give you any more instruction than "aren't these cool? Let's try some!" leaving out a lot of important troubleshooting steps. In reality, hand lettering is really difficult at first, and it's better to start with basic shapes (instead of jumping right into letters, which this book does) and practice those umpteen times. Like others have said, you don't get more than a couple lines for each letter. After fiddling with this book, I went to YouTube and found some comprehensive tutorials and free, printable worksheets with lots of good advice, especially for navigating tricky shapes. Don't buy this if you're a beginner, unless you want to risk being discouraged and giving up.

Seems like it would be a cool book but the one I got seems to be missing pages. It doesn't have the 5 different alphabet styles except for what seems like the last page of one, with just Y and Z. The whole first 3/4 of the book is empty practice pages and the last 1/4 is actual information/tips, examples, projects. I've included a video to show what I mean.I'd happily leave a higher rating if I could be sent a proper copy.

I LOVE this book!! I’ve wanted to improve my penmanship and learn modern calligraphy and lettering for a looooong time. I thought I’d give this book a try and I’m so confident in my lettering now. I’m excited to create my own projects and show off my new skills!!

I really enjoy this book. It has lots of room to practice in and is very helpful in learning different fonts. I was super excited to find that the company who makes this book offers an additional free download of content for FREE! The only downfall n the reason I chose 4 stars instead of 5 is because the ink bleeds thru the paper really badly. I have been using some dual ended markers and it makes it really hard to see what ur doing on the following page.

I am using a brush pen to practice and the paper is so thin that it is bleeding through onto the next practice page. You would think the would have used thicker paper knowing it was a practice book.

Great book for a beginner to lettering. I like how it covers more than just one style, and give tips to put your own twist on things. The last chapter includes ways to combine the different styles and flourishes into projects and artwork. The only negative I have is I wish the binding was more like a spiral notebook so that it says flat.It would also be nice if there were more blank practice pages included.

Review

“Truby attempts to inform the entire story, addressing plot, character, tone, symbolism, and dialog. The key here is to grow a script organically rather than force the story into preexisting mechanics . . . Highly recommended.” ―Library Journal“A comprehensive guide to writing stories of all kinds, Truby's tome is invaluable to any writer looking to put an idea to paper.” ―Booklist“The Anatomy Of Story is concrete and practical without resorting to simplistic 'Three Act Structure' screenwriting clichés. It will be an indispensable guide to writing your first great script. Then, the perfect survival manual to help you negotiate the often confusing, contradictory and cutthroat world of professional screenwriting.” ―Larry Wilson, co-writer /co-producer of BEETLEJUICE and co-writer of THE ADDAMS FAMILY“A veritable bible for screenwriters.” ―Backstage“If you're ready to graduate from the boy-meets-girl league of screenwriting, meet John Truby . . . [His lessons draw] epiphanies that make you see the contours of your psyche as sharply as your script.” ―LA Weekly

They key to writing, as I see it, would be to organize your thoughts. I tried what this author recommends, and my chapters seem to move much quicker as a result. Of course, he allows for change as you go. This book seems to make sense of the craft.

Well, it took me long enough to get around to reading and reviewing this.I have some favorites out there when it comes to writing (Shawn Coyne, Steve Pressfield, Larry Brooks) and I'd been pretty well versed in outlining and structure. I work in novel writing as opposed to scripts, so I didn't think I needed to add this to my list.I was wrong. I learned so much and I highly recommend this book.A couple things were real eye-openers to me.If you've been working with the three-act structure and doing things like "getting it down" then you might read this and at least see why you could be harming your craft with some habits that might be counter-productive. I know I learned a few things that will save me grief.

After reading this the first, i found myself rather skeptical of the instruction this provided. It urged the author to first design the character and to pick a character flaw that he will resolve. Every other facet of the story will spring from that choice including who the other characters are, what the plot will be, the story world. Truby calls it an organic approach but i found myself disagreeing with this assessment, it feels artificial to me. He also devoted a section to the moral of the story. This approach didnt feel like it covered everystory. Indeed, he had trouble bringing this to genre type projects. Also, the moral section troubled me because not every story has a moral. Some feel like explorations rather then declarations. Another issue i had with the content is the lack of outdated examlles. Gone with the wind, tootsie, La confidential. I feel updates are neccesary, and this applies to genre as well. More contemporary movies and novels will have a better time resonating with audiences.Despite my skepticism, i started applying the tools and referring back to it when writing. When i looked at other theoretical frameworks for writing, i discovered there was a lot of overlap. Similar sections but with different language. A prime example of this is Story maps. It better suits my approach to story analysis, while ackowledging all the same topics including theme (which is what tryby referred to as the moral).Overall i believe truby to be a great resource that shaped the way i approached writing and reading for the better.

A must read for writers, both seasoned and aspiring. A great contrast to SAVE THE CAT; a much deeper take on plotting that really looks at the way theme and characterization drive plot forward. I could talk about this all day, but suffice it to say that if you are planning to write a book/screenplay or have written ten, you need to read this. It will really help you solidify some of those concepts you know instinctively but perhaps have never tried to quantify.

I have spent a lot of money on screenwriting and novel writing books. I have had recommendations for books that were different, or foolproof; formula based, character based, plot based, etc. In my experience, the screenwriting books do it better than the novel writing ones, but it still takes some searching to find something really useful. I first used John Truby's book for a screenplay I was writing. I followed the first few chapters religiously and discovered I was solving problems I didn't even realize existed, creating deeper characters and stronger arcs all as part of the process. It wasn't formulaic and didn't give me a standard plot, but it did adhere to a few fundamental truths about story and character that cannot be ignored. As with any book, you need to use your brain and alter the rules to fit your story, but trust me, don't stray too far. It's very easy for someone to think that their character or story is "too good" or "above" the rules of conventional story telling but trust me, even the most obscure stories follow this basic format (if they are any good). It gives you relatable examples from a variety of movies, and the exercises are actually practical (none of the tired clichés such as "write about an experience you had where..." or "tell a story using these key words as a starting point"). All the exercises are specifically designed to help you develop YOUR story, not just any random plot.Because of the success I had with this method, I used the book again for planning my novel. Now, with a novel there are a few changes that need to be made. More happens in a novel, and of course things like "the audience reveal" are generally strictly cinematic tools and don't translate well to literature. However, I found the same successes with it for novel writing. Same problems being solved, same richness added to the plot and character.I would recommend this book to anyone writing something with plot. I bought this originally in paperback and purchased the kindle version so that I could just carry around my iPad. Use in conjunction with your favourite other texts (I like Blake Snyder's "Save the Cat" beat sheet for pacing. I cross referenced this with my favourite novels from the genre I was writing in to find the appropriate pacing for the novel). There is no such thing as a magic book that will make you a great writer, BUT if you have skills and a great idea, this will help you workshop and develop the idea to give you something you actually start writing.

... after reading this book, you might be hungry for more! :)you will be challenged and convicted, yet comforted and encouraged.I have the Kindle version of this book and the various topics are easily navigable. Topics include 'Acceptance; Atonement; Character; Compromise; Doubt; Eternity; Evolution; Free Will; Holiness; Marriage; Mormonism; Pleasure; Regeneration; Sovereignty; The Bible; The Trinity; Temptations; the Will of God and much more. After each quote it is shown from which book or sermon it was taken, so you can read the whole for yourself. Each quote is like a gold nugget leading to a gold rush for more of what C.H Spurgeon wrote. Here are a couple of 'gold nuggets' from this book, followed by where you can find it:"Nothing hardens like the gospel when it is long trifled with. [A Great Gospel For Great Sinners, Volume 31, Sermon #1837 - 1 Timothy 1:15-17]"Who, think you, are the most honest men, - those who tell you plainly what the Scriptures say concerning this wrath of God, or those who smooth it over, or deny it altogether? ["Flee From The Wrath to Come", Volume 46, Sermon #2704 - Matthew 3:7, Hebrews 6:18]"When we shall see the dead rise from the grave by their own power, then may we expect to see ungodly sinners of their own free will turning to Christ. [Morning And Evening, Page 505]Go for it, buy the book :)

I purchased this book after reading all the glowing referrals on Amazon This book really delivers. I love the organization by topics. as well as the listing of the sermon information with each quote, as well as the Scripture reference. This can really be a useful tool in teaching, preaching, as well as part of a person's Bible study. A great addition for any Christian's library.

WOW! not having read all Spurgeon's works it is amazing to get some highlights of this great man of God. He really did walk with God, wrestle with life and surrendered to His sovereign authority. Anyone wanting to have an idea of what was in the mind of this preacher should consider reading this book. His quotes are still applicable today.

It is always good to read Spurgeon. I read the book, Shadow of the Broad Brim, in the 60's, and haven't put Spurgeon down since. McCaskell does an excellent job of categorizing these quotes for a systematic look...

This is beautifully written. Pastor Spurgeon clearly had the gift of teaching about the Lord Jesus Christ. It is a blessing to collect his works and I highly recommend this.

What is there to say? It's Spurgeon. You can't go wrong quoting Spurgeon. His life was fascinating, his ministry brilliant, his words were about as Godly as a human could get.

I ordered this Spurgeon Book for my husband and two sons-in-law for Christmas gifts. At first it was out of stock, but I received an email message that said it was going to ship. I was very happy that the books arrived in time for Christmas. Everyone was surprised and happy about this book. They enjoyed reading Spurgeon's quotes. Very useful in preaching messages.

I love anything Spurgeon wrote. He is the most published and read preacher ever. His wisdom and clarity show why.

“A skilled exploration of why notable 20th-century European philosophers and intellectuals — figures such as Martin Heidegger, Carl Schmitt, Walter Benjamin and Michel Foucault, among others — had at times succumbed to what [Lilla] calls ‘tyrannophilia,' a narcissistic embrace of totalitarian politics, assuming that tyrants would put their big ideas into action." —Carlos Lozada, The Washington Post“The essays that make up Mark Lilla’s book . . . are driven by his sense of disappointment, a lover’s kind of disappointment, that such profound and influential minds should have been so politically insouciant when confronted by the hectic barbarity of the 20th century. . . . Lilla has a gift for nimble exposition, and each study in his collection is illuminating, often revelatory.” —The New York Times Book Review“Mark Lilla is today the leading intellectual commentator in the United States on European thinkers and ideas. . . . He understands them better than they are understood in their own countries. And often better than they understand themselves.”  —Die Zeit"This is important. Lilla's short, elegant and readable book is about what happens when philosophers get tangled up in the real world. It is also a matter of recognizing that the world is in the shape that it is because of the influence of the most rarefied of minds." --Nicolas Lezard, The Guardian, Paperback of the Week"Lilla's accessible, summary look at eight 20th-century thinkers is a compilation of cautionary tales...shrewd advice...a very canny book showing us how not to think and chew politics at the same time." -- Carlin Romano, The Philadelphia Inquirer"As Mr. Lilla ably shows, what is common to these thinkers is a rejection of political philosophy. They deny the possibility of a patient, sober and rational exploration of political possibilities. And even when they become disillusioned with specific tyrants--Hitler, Stalin, Mao, Castro, Khomeini--they continue to reject political moderation and balanced analysis." --Daniel J. Mahoney, The Wall Street Journal"'Lilla has a gift for nimble exposition, and each study in his collection is illuminating, often revelatory,' Sunil Khilnani wrote here in 2002." -- The New York Times Book Review

Originally released a few days before September 11, 2001, Mark Lilla’s The Reckless Mind was re-released by NYRB roughly corresponding with his new book of essays on reactionary political thinking, The Shipwrecked Mind. In the intervening years, these essays feel both more and less relevant: Foucault has lasted, but the problems of his politics have been explored more completely by the left and the right. Revelations about Heidegger have been made deeper and more notedly “problematic” with the translation of the black notebooks. Derrida, the only living figure in the book when it was released, has passed and his relevance to critical theory waned incredibly quickly. Yet the essays in this collection on Heidegger, Carl Schmitt, Walter Benjamin, Kojève, Foucault, and Derrida are still readable and fascinating. There are, however, some puzzling indictments in this book. Lilla’s essay on the relationship between Karl Jaspers, Hannah Arendt, and Heidegger is clear-eyed in its assignment of Heidegger’s politics, but Heidegger is not the intellectual about the which the essay concerns itself. Are Jaspers and Arendt also guilty of political recklessness? Lilla, despite the very clear-eyed focus of the essay, does not say. Walter Benjamin’s exact offense seems unknown as if Lilla thinks that flirting with Marxism was in and of itself reckless even when distancing from Soviet and Maoist forms. Is it that Benjamin was reckless in his combining messianism and recursion to Frankfurt Marxism? It hardly had political effect and Benjamin never made apologetics for regimes in the way that Schmitt, Heidegger or Foucault had done. Furthermore, while some of the digs at Derrida are apt—particularly Derrida’s highly symbolic and affective reading of Marx—again it is hard to see what the consequences are to these politics. Derrida’s deconstruction seems muddled, but not reckless. It is, now, however, largely irrelevant.Again one suspects notices that these were essays for Times Literary Supplement and the New York Review of books, and are excellent profiles, but the essays connecting the key figures do not thematically relate the figures enough. Lilla’s final essay about Syracuse and the nature of tyrannical philosophers is excellent, but he does not really lay out priorly exactly what was tyrannical about Benjamin. HIs treatment of Kojeve was interesting and clarifying, but the exact nature of the Strauss and Kojeve exchanges needed more development as well. Furthermore, Kojeve’s correspondence has been collected in “On Authority” giving a more complete view of the exchange than when only Strauss’s “On Tyranny” was translated. In short, this is an insightful but highly frustrating book. Lilla seems more annoyed with the left than the right, even if he thinks the right’s sins are greater. He does not make the digs at Schmitt or even Heidegger that he does Foucault and Derrida. Lilla’s thematic unity is merely interest in alternative and possibly totalitarian worldviews, but any more coherent and cogent theme is resisted beyond that.

This is a somewhat uneven book that nevertheless is written in such a uniquely unbiased manner that I am tempted to give it no less than 5 stars. As one of the reviewers pointed out, the weakest point is probably the essay on Heidegger; it does not discuss almost at all ideas and focuses fully on the Heidegger/Arendt/Jaspers relationship. Nevertheless, the essays on Foucault and especially on Derrida contain perhaps some of the most concise and revealing analysis of their "philosophy." Mark Lilla takes no sides, and somehow manages to present an objective picture that is fully credible. And exactly in this manner, he shows us Foucault as an extremely controversial, highly intelligent and somewhat "lost" mind, while fully exposing Derrida's total charlatanism. It is important to understand that the influence of Derrida on American academia cannot and must not be underestimated. He is one of the spiritual fathers of the American academic left and one of the reasons why you hear, for example, the term "social justice" being repeated like a mantra. JUSTICE, as interpreted by Derrida is THE ONLY concept that cannot be subject to any deconstruction, because resides OUTSIDE AND BEYOND ANY LAW. According to Derrida, JUSTICE can be experienced in a mystical way through FEELING alone, because it is outside of reach for both "nature" and "reason." Voilà ! JUSTICE means FEELING. That means simply that for those on the side of Justice (e.g. Antifa, BLM and similar abominations) EVERYTHING is allowed. The book is a guide to a cold minded understanding to many contemporary trends of thought.

Just starting this but I like this stuff. Sort of my dear old true major in college.

I have been following Mark Lilla's work, especially in the New York Review of Books, for a long time now and I have consistently thought that he is one of the most original and stimulating thinkers in the American academy today. The essays in this book are often beautifully written and always refreshing to read.

Excellent book. Not just a critique of liberal failure, but an action plan for liberal success.

One wonders if the pleas are somewhat circular - how do we think deeply and with passion and caution for days on end? Do we not need a group of good souls who work like a writer's group to accompany every philosopher...

It is dangerous for intellectuals to get involved with politics. First, there is the thing with hemlock, then stuff like carpet bombing, hubris, grandiosity, etc. Stay away from Syracuse. At the end, though, ... what is the point, why do all that reading, all that work? Tell me that Trump does not represent the end of democracy as we dreamed it, he is the ugly face of failed Reason.

A cogently argued well written group of essays that are highly informative. I would highly recommend this short book to anyone interested in the political thinking of a group of highly influential twentieth century thinkers.
