This book is the only head and neck anatomy book I'm familiar with, so I can't compare it to anything except a general anatomy textbook that I've used previously. This text has helpful illustrations and photos. I really appreciated the flashcards included in the back of the book. I tore them out and used them for studying, though I wish they had included more on muscles and nerves. The keyword sections of each chapter were not always helpful, there were several technical terms I had to look up on the internet because they were not in the glossary. However, the text itself was rather thorough in explaining anatomical locations and providing pragmatic landmarks in relation to administering anesthesia or identifying sources of infection. It also mentioned certain parts that are variable among the human population, like the absence of the middle superior alveolar nerve in about 1/4 of people. Quite fascinating.Unfortunately, I noticed several errors in the text and on the flashcards while studying. Certainly this happens with any book, but with this being the 5th edition I find it surprising how many I found. At least I learned enough from the book to know when I saw an error!

Really decent anatomy book. This was required for my first semester of dental hygiene school, and it really is one of the better textbooks I've had. Very easy to follow. Also, I love that it has flashcards included in the back!

great illustrations

I rent this book and I was expecting less of what I received.. I was surprised that I receive a new book. Well pleased with my order..Besides that I save money, comparing to another websites..

Great illustrations. Very clear.

Just as described! Thank you :D

My daughter rented this for class. She said it was fine

Great book

Review

"The clearest picture we have to date of the post-Soviet landscape."--The New Yorker"A triumph of the art of contemporary history. In fewer than 200 pages, Kotkin elucidates the implosion of the Soviet empire--the most important and startling series of international events of the past fifty years--and clearly spells out why, thanks almost entirely to the 'principal restraint' of the Soviet leadership, that collapse didn't result in a cataclysmic war, as all experts had long forecasted."--The Atlantic Monthly"Concise and persuasive The mystery, for Kotkin, is not so much why the Soviet Union collapsed as why it did so with so little collateral damage."--The New York Review of Books

This book covers a really interesting topic; the collapse of the Soviet Union, and there are surpisingly few other books that cover this topic. The content is very good, so I recommend the book. The major limitation is that the writing is so patchy; it appears to be written by a variety of authors or a single author in different moods such that in parts it is written intricately like a text book; casually, almost like a conversation; and sometimes like a popular book. But I recommend that you buy it and just put up with this defect. The book focusses on the interesting question about how the Soviet Union passed away so peacefully, and although this question is not really answered, it is a a point of central interest to modern history and well covered in this book.

I have read the first two of Kotkin's volumes on Stalin, and I eagerly look forward to the third. I bought this book because I thought he would help me understand the collapse of the Soviet Union. His understanding of the collapse revolves around three concepts: (1) Gorbachev's "romantic idealism," errantly hoping that through perestroika and glasnost the Soviet Union could be reframed around "humanistic socialism," which was said to be Lenin's initial ideal; (2) how this "romantic idealism" undercut the entire power structure of the Soviet Union, because free thought and press challenged the underpinnings of the Soviet Union; and (3) how the former apparatchiks of the Communist party, and others in the social elite, pillaged the State's entire (but outdated and antiquated) economy in the "privatization" of the country's assets. In this historical process, the Soviet Union splintered completely, and Russia, an agglomeration of fifty-some nationalities, emerged from the ashes. Kotkin does a great job describing the economic implosion and catastrophic GDP shrinkage, which was stopped only by a re-collection of legal power by the presidency and prime minister of Russia, our favorite guy, Vladimir Putin.Kotkin is amazed that during the implosion the Russian "power structure" of military, internal police (KGB), and regular police did not also blow inward. While the Army was shattered, Kotkin believes that the command structure remained relatively intact, so that no nuclear armageddon occurred.I enjoyed this book. I also agree with the reviewer that it was harder to read than Kotkin's other books. The concepts of macroeconomic theory and the specifics of the political structures--I found this hard to understand, so I read these sections twice Also, I was not clear where all the newly enriched apparatchiks came from other than a fuzzy "educated elite."

I found the book extremely interesting, thought provoking and laced with meaningful details. Was wonderful to finally get the background story on why the Soviet Union failed and the various actions leading up to it. I had relatives in East Germany during the Soviet occupation and visited there in 1983. I came to understand firsthand how much the East Germans detested the Soviets and how they were completely "under the thumb" of the Soviets. The East Germans would have revolted had they felt they had any realistic means to do so. This book brought together all of my prior knowledge as well as the aspects that I had never known until I had the opportunity of reading about it.

It's a great synopsis of the collapse of the USSR. As other reviewers have mentioned, the writing style is choppy, quickly changing topics. At times the author uses subjective terms without explaining what they mean. Also, he never really delves into the reason that Armegeddon was Averted. Why exactly did the top Soviet brass not rain nuclear hellfire on their crumbling union?I enjoyed reading it mostly, but would be reluctant to recommend it to a friend.

Stephen Kotkin's "Armageddon Averted" is a good, concise history of the Soviet collage from 1970-2000. Kotkin has two themes that he repeatedly touches on: 1) that the Soviet system collapsed from within and 2) that the collapse was remarkably peaceful. Kotkin's work is very good, although at only 200 pages, it is a cursory account of the Soviet collapse.Kotkin focuses almost entirely on the Soviet system's inner workings. He describes how the Soviet system was destined to collapse from within and would have collapsed earlier had oil prices not increased in the 1970s, allowing the Soviet Union to continue to finance itself. Only with the coming of the new generation - Gorbachev - did anyone in the Soviet leadership have the courage to realize that the system must be changed. However, when Gorbachev tried to save the Soviet Union by liberalizing part of society, he set loose powers and forces and quickly lost control of the country. It was at this point, Kotkin argues, that the real miracle occurred: while the Soviet Union had used military force to keep Hungary and Czechoslovakia in its sphere, and had an entire security apparatus that had perfected the police state, the Soviet dissolution was almost completely bloodless. The Soviet leadership (or reactionaries in the government) did not crack down on its own citizens, and neither did it lash out at the rest of the world in either a conventional world designed to foment nationalism nor launch a spiteful nuclear strike. This is a very good book, but it is lacking on details. Kotkin's writes from the perspective of a textbook, making sweeping statements and broad generalizations without much supporting argument. The book also lacks any personal look at the fall of the Soviet Union (other than occasional anecdotes about the leadership), unlike the excellent (but very different) "Lenin's Tomb." Kotkin also completely dismisses any credit to the United States or any other foreign power or policy for the Soviet collapse. Despite these drawbacks, though, this is an excellent book for anyone interested in Soviet/Russian history, modern history, or political science and foreign policy.

"Quebec 1759" is an Osprey Campaign Series entry, and the second Osprey look at the key battle in North America of the Seven Year's War. The book follows the standard Osprey format in presenting a concise account of the campaign. It opens with an introduction and a comparison of the opposing commanders and their armies and plans. Succeeding chapters cover the British campaign against Quebec, leading up to the decisive battle on the Plains of Abraham in September 1759, and concluding with the relief of the British Army in spring 1760, themselves besieged in the captured fortress. The book offers a good selection of period illustrations, maps, diagrams and photographs, and the narrative is workmanlike. Author Stuart Reid spends perhaps too much time on his own opinions about the campaign, including British Commander General James Wolfe's disputes with his own subordinates. In the process, Reid essentially accuses Wolfe of psychosomatic illnesses. A more common explanation is that Wolfe suffered from, among other things, kidney stones, an exquisitely painful and debilitating ailment that can be brought on by extended stress. Worth a look as an introduction to the topic.

While I was reading the book, I was suprised at how little the French side was covered. It was as though the French didn`t even fight, and just let the British bow them over. I felt that a bit more balanced coverage of the campaign would have been better. Having only the colors of the French metropolitian regiments shown as a representation of the French forces was too little. Of all of the Osprey books that I have bought, this one is probobly the one that I am most disappointed in. It was a fair account of the British side, but even that, I found it annoying that the depection of a member of the 13th Regt as a stand in for other regiments in the campaign was a bit off. There are plenty of North American British reenactors of regiments in that campaign which could have been used. I`m currently a Masters student and if I had submitted something like this for a paper, I would probobly fail.

Very useful book describing the battles for Quebec. This is an Army centric overview but I wish there had been more information about the specific roles that the Royal Navy played. This could be described as one of the first joint operations in the last four hundred years.I have visited Quebec City and not much remains of the original site.

Recently I had read "War That Made America - A Short History of the French and Indian War" by Fred Anderson. I was particularly taken with chapter 21 - "The Plains of Abraham". A pivotal battle, two seasoned commanders, events hinge on apparent chance and then both leaders are killed in battle - an amazing story told extremely well. I made a mental note to check Osprey Publications to determine if they have a title related to this battle. My search was fruitful and I purchased "Quebec 1759 The Battle That Won Canada" by Stuart Reid. Utilizing extensive illustrations the author introduces us to the principal French and British officers; provides detailed descriptions of the various forces and their uniforms and equipment. The focus in this book is the military events, who were the belligerents, what equipment they use, where they camped, how many soldiers each army fielded, how many cannons they employed...you get the idea. This is not a geo-political analysis describing why the British traveled to Quebec in 1759 and fought the French. That very interesting story is told in "War That Made America - A Short History of the French and Indian War" mentioned above.Readers new to Osprey titles should be aware all books from this published are similar in size to a National Geographic magazine with a thicker paper cover. The page count of this title was 98 and contained many period artwork and drawing reproductions, several full color painting created especially for this title and 3 double pages maps showing troop placements and battle progress.

While credible in basics, this work does little to fully explore the battle. It is sadly deficient in enumerating the activities and names of French regulars and militia. It does bless the reader with photographs of the fix-bayonet sequence of period British regulars (whatever that has to do with anything). Not equal with other Osprey volumes (René Chartrand's Monongahela for example).

This book is a much better review of the Quebec 1759 campaign. It gives a balanced account covering both sides in detail. Be it a history student, wargamer or military modeller, it gives the information that you would need.

Osprey's Order of Battle series offers considerably more detail than its standard Campaign series format. In Quebec 1759, René Chartrand provides his usual high quality level of historical research, as well as unique insights into this famous campaign that determined the fate of New France. The volume begins with eight pages that provide the strategic background to the campaign and outline the opposing French and British plans. However, the heart of the volume consists of 49 pages spent detailing all the various French and British units that participated in the campaign. Each line infantry battalion receives one full page of coverage, listing its strength, organization and recent history. Minor units, such as the French colonial cavalry, various militias, Royal Marines, artillery and engineers also receive similar coverage. For anyone interested in the Quebec campaign, the order of battle information provided herein will be indispensable. There is also considerable information on the unit commanders interwoven throughout this section. The campaign itself is covered in the final 30 pages and Chartrand's summary is flawless. Many minor logistical and administrative issues are addressed, in addition to the tactical maneuvering. Chartrand's account of the final climactic Battle on the Plains of Abraham is the best that I have ever read concerning that action. A large foldout map of the battlefield is also provided. This is a superb piece of military historical research.

The Bhagavad Gita: A Biography (Lives of Great Religious Books)

Review

"Selected for WGBH News "Here are the books we read this year that we think you’ll love" 2014""In his masterful new biography of the Gita--part of an excellent Princeton series dedicated to the lives of great religious books--Richard Davis, a professor of religion at Bard College, shows us, in subtle and stunning detail, how the text of the Gita has been embedded in one political setting after another, changing its meaning again and again over the centuries."---Wendy Doniger, New York Review of Books"In the 21st century, The Gita continues to thrive. India's present Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, gives it out as a gift on his trips abroad. Discourses on The Gita by spiritual leaders are a part of the cultural life of every major Indian city. Some Indians disagree with its vision of ethics or consider it a relic of the past; but even they, too, must engage with it closely in order to refute it. Mr. Davis's book is an ideal introduction to the text, showing how the meanings of a book reside not just in its words but its life in history."---Chandrahas Choudhury, Wall Street Journal"Like all the great religious books featured in this superb series from Princeton University Press, the Gita has transcended the circumstances of its birth. Rival schools of Hindu theology have risen from various turns of Krishna's phrases, while Westerners have seen echoes of their own traditions. In modern India, Gandhi thought the Gita reflected the eternal battle between light and dark in every human heart, and in the drive for Indian independence, even secular nationalists championed it as a patriotic text. The Gita and the moral issues it raises are still alive."---Brian Bethune, Macleans"In The Bhagavad Gita: A Biography, the latest in the series Lives of Great Religious Books, Davis crisply summarizes this oft-quoted Hindu scripture, in which Krishna reveals his true identity as the 'imperishable Lord of All Beings.'"---Donna Seaman, Booklist"The Gita is one of the oldest and most fascinating texts ever written, and I love how its 'biography' comes to life in this new book. It's a living, breathing text that has constantly been in motion since its origin. . . . I should mention this book is part of a new series (Lives of Great Religious Books) published by Princeton University Press. Next on my reading list are the biographies of The Tibetan Book of the Dead and Augustine's Confessions."---April Peavey, WGBH"Davis deftly traces the many reincarnations of this 700-verse poem over the past two millennia, both in India and in the West."---Fiona Capp, Sydney Morning Herald"[The Bhagavad Gita: A Biography] appears in the worthy ‘Lives of Great Religious Books' series, which takes a novel approach to ‘great books.' Davis's execution of this approach is superb . . . Davis neatly organizes a great deal of material and he presents it in utterly accessible prose. This is an easy read - and a great one too." (Choice)"Davis . . . provides a comprehensive, detailed and lucid account of the ways that the Gita has lived over the centuries." (Cover Drive)"A comprehensive, detailed and lucid account of the ways that the Gita has lived over the centuries."---Sudhirendar Sharma, Speaking Tree

From the Inside Flap

"This is an exciting book about an exciting book, namely, the Bhagavad Gita, a text in which Hinduism comes closest to possessing a universal scripture. Davis traces the varying course of its semantic trajectory through history with erudite clarity. A must-read for anyone interested in the Gita."--Arvind Sharma, author ofGandhi: A Spiritual Biography"No work of traditional India needs a biography more than the Bhagavad Gita, for no text has had a more complicated life, from its birth in the epic world of theMahabharata to its maturity in Indian modernity. Reading intelligently depends in part on knowing how others in the past have read, and for theGita's past, Richard Davis has provided the best guidance available."--Sheldon Pollock, Arvind Raghunathan Professor of Sanskrit and South Asian Studies, Columbia University"This superb and beautifully written book represents a substantial contribution to the field, and will become a first-tier resource for anyone interested in the subject. DavisÂ’s authoritative voice is a dependable guide throughout. I cannot imagine this book being done better by anyone else."--John Stratton Hawley, author of Three Bhakti Voices: Mirabai, Surdas, and Kabir in Their Times and Ours"I thoroughly enjoyed reading this biography of the Bhagavad Gita. Its uniqueness rests in its breadth and historical scope--each chapter opens new contexts and perspectives. Davis is a careful scholar who writes clear, straightforward prose, remarkably free of jargon."--Diana L. Eck, author of India: A Sacred Geography"Davis examines the Gita in its own time, in medieval and modern India, in its travels to Europe and America, and beyond--in other words, he presents the long view of this bookÂ’s life. He is very learned and smart, and writes with a minimum of scholarly jargon, in a very accessible and interesting way."--Thomas R. Trautmann, author ofIndia: Brief History of a Civilization

This book is called “A Biography,” as it examines historically the various ways the Bhagavad Gita has stimulated a large variety of responses and interpretations among its readers. The Gita has been considered the most sacred book in modern Hinduism and some scholars consider it as the best “compendium of the prevalent philosophical theories of the [Indian classical] time” (W. Doniger’s review in The New York Review of Books, December 4, 2014, page 47). Professor Davis offers us a good introduction to this masterpiece and traces the various ways it has been interpreted to deal with the perennial struggle for self-control regarding our duties. He presents the context of the composition of the Gita, its historical and present relevance, and the central place that it has had, not only in India but also in Europe and the United States. The author is a professor of religion at Bard College, and writes about Indian religion. This volume is part of a series of “Biographies” of great religious books from Princeton University Press. The Gita is the best known piece of the Mahabharata, the longest poem ever written, which literally means ''the great story of the Bharatas,'' the legendary first kings of India, although the poem also deals with the nature and forces that govern the universe, the way humans are organized, as well as about the duties and rituals to be performed. Probably, this epic poem was composed by several different authors. In the Indian culture it is usually stated that “everything in the Mahabharata is elsewhere [and] what is not there is nowhere;” and a prominent scholar affirms that “it was like an ancient Wikipedia, to which anyone who knew Sanskrit, could add a bit here, a bit there” (W. Doniger, The Hindus. An Alternative History, 2009, page 264). The Gita was composed in the Indian classical period and although it has many references to historical facts, it is not an historical account, it is rather an epic poem; in his recent book, Why Homer Matters ( 2014, page 3), Adam Nicholson says that an epic is neither an act of memory, nor an historical account; its purpose is “to make the distant past as immediate to us as our own lives, to make the great stories of long ago beautiful and painful now.”.The book covers a large variety of subjects related to the Gita, and it provides a summary of the varied interpretations and influences. As an example of this wide variation, he shows how the Gita inspired both Gandhi and his message of non-violence, as well as his assassin, Nathuram Godse, who claimed that he was following Krishna and his teachings. Professor Davis develops the idea that the Gita forms part of what Aldous Huxley used to call “perennial philosophy,” providing universal guidance to all humans; and this is the way this masterpiece has been received in Europe and America. Professor Davis also mentions how the Gita has been presented as a Hindu religious book, thus fostering nationalistic and far-right fanatical political views. He includes an interesting chapter about performances in our time, where he mentions poetic and operatic renditions, as well as “visual performances,” and movies which found their inspiration in the Gita. In another chapter, he discusses the translations of the Gita; he mentions that it has been translated over 300 times into English as well as into more than 75 languages. From a select list of 20 English versions, he picks and analyses four “exemplary” translations from a scholar, a poet, a devotee, and a philosopher; unfortunately, the well-known versions from E. Easwaran, G. and B. Feuerstein, J. Mascaro, and W. Sargeant are not part of his list of 20. Wendy Doniger in her review of the book concludes that this is “masterful new biography of the Gita,” but considers the book “more than adequately respectful: he leans over backward to avoid offending Hindus who revere the Gita.”

Excellent book which provides social, historical and political contexts that give valuable perspectives to anyone who wants to read and study the classic Hindu text. This book is one in the excellent series on great religious books. The author, himself a respected scholar, provides valuable background essential to a true understanding of this classic work.

Somewhat disappointing. More like s history of the book’s ( The Bhagavad-Gita) publication than an evolution of the ideas. The part about how it came together as a text in old times is something general that could be said about every old classic. Not an exploration of the very challenging ideas of the B-G.

A master narrative of the life of a famous text by a master scholar. I would recommend this book for anyone interested not only in the Gita but in Hinduism topics generally. Davis is incredibly informative

Enjoyed it very much. It's part of a great series.

it has a wonderful insight of B.G

These are clean concise essays that are sparkling in their clarity. People interpret scripture according to time, place and circumstance. The 6 essays are about (1) the Bhagavad Gita at the time of its composition (2) its status in Medieval India (3) its migration to the West (4) Krishna, the Gita and India (5) modern Gita translations and (6) the Gita in our time. The Gita lives through its many interpretations through the centuries. For example in modern times we have interpretations by Mohandas Gandhi and Aurobindo Ghose. The author is a professor who traveled throughout India to get local views. Comments in the footnotes are inviting and the annotated list is helpful for further study.

This is a worthy entry in this really fine series (I have four of them already), and one of the clearest and most straightforward. I enjoyed it a lot, as someone who has worked on the Gita for years. There is an excellent set of references and bibliography. It is, however, not an exposition or critique of the text in any detail: it is really about the history of the vagaries of the text and its influence. It is interesting in particular how much of the Gita was overshadowed early on by the stories/histories of Krishna as a child, cowherd, etc. as the "bhakti" movement gathered force in the medieval period. A chunk of the book is about the use of the Gita as a political force beginning in the late 1880s, in part as a Hindu "bible" to counter the prestige of Western "bibles". Towards the end of the text there is a discussion of a few recent translations into English (from Van Buitenen to Stephen Mitchell), and a glimpse of various settings where there are oral readings. My study of the Gita was influenced strongly by Zaehner's old Oxford translation and Winthrop Sargeant's valuable word by word translation and exegesis (neither of which are mentioned here) and I have a fondness for Barbara Stoler Miller's elegant translation (which does get a mention).

It's all been said by other reviewers. I'll simply add that I find this map FAR and AWAY easier to read than the Trails Illustrated maps. If your eyes, like mine, are over 50 years old, you may, too. It covers the core of Grand Canyon National Park, at a great scale. Just be sure you review the information about what this map covers, if you're thinking about hiking in an extremely remote part of the Canyon (particularly in parts more than a few miles west of Hermit's Rest). The images provided by Amazon at the top include an image that shows the area covered by this map, compared to the 7.5 minute quads. In addition to the map, this document provides brief descriptions of all the trails (both maintained and unmaintained) so you could use this and not need a separate guidebook.

I really like these maps. This covers the majority of the Grand Canyon trail system and this is the map that the park ranger told me he prefers to see visitors have on hand. Very durable. Most importantly, very accurate. I used Sky Terrain maps last summer in the Aspen/Crested Butte area and was highly impressed. My experience with the GC map did nothing but reinforce that opinion. I think they set the standard in topographic maps. If you plan on doing any backpacking in the GC, this is the one to buy. The maps they give you at the park entrance only cover the amenities and roads at the rim and maps of the park shuttle. This has all the backcountry zones and sites, as well as the more established sites well marked. Great for trip planning too. One side covers the rim/slightly western side of the park while the other side covers the eastern aspects of the park. I purchased it for its full coverage of the Escalante and Tonto trail.

I recently used this map on the Tonto Trail between Grandview and South Kaibab. While it's pretty hard to get lost on the trail — you can only go in two directions, east or west, and the trail always goes through the path of least resistance — there were a few drainage crossings where it was unclear just where to cross and then pickup the trail and the map helped me find the right places. It was always quite useful for helping me plan for the day ahead and its warnings about difficult sections were accurate.

I spent 6 days in the canyon, logging about 80 miles total. This map is awesome! Unlike USGS topo maps, it has pertinent information to individual trails, NPS data and Visitor Center bus routes. I hiked in from the North Rim, spent several nights camping and at Phantom Ranch, hiked up to the South Rim and back down, then exited the Canyon via the North Rim. This map was all I needed because the trails are well maintained. Was always able to triangulate my position using this map. Highly recommended for all but the most demanding canyoneering experts out there.

This 5th Edition map is a very detailed topographic map of the Grand Canyon National Park and Kaibab National Forest . It's 1:40,000 scale provides all the important information you'll need to navigate above and below the North and South Rims. Trail profiles, trail descriptions and difficulty ratings are great enhancements for this water resistant map. I used it this summer and found it indispensable. It is a MUST for any serious Grand Canyon hiker,

I bought this for my 4 day back packing trip in the canyon. I went down the new hence trail and up the grand view. I've used the nat geo map before and it's a good map too but I like this one better. It just seems to be easier to read. Side note, the new hance trail head is not marked at all on the side of the road, there's just a little clearing where the trail starts, it took us a few times of driving past it to actually find it. The map is accurate in describing where the trail head is though.

Nice waterproof and tear resistant materiel. Lots of information and easy to read. Its too large scale for off trail hiking. Since GC consists of cliffs and slots great detail is needed to see the radical elevation difference shown by contour lines. This is hard to see at the scale of this map. Nothing wrong with the map, just don't use it to hike off trail.

This version has so much information packed into a small space, you could plan and hike without anything else. Campgrounds labeled, water sources indicated, distances between points calculated and listed in an easy to read format. On my last hike my friend had the Nat Geo map and I carried this. I could pick out our location just as easily but I also had instant access to additional information. I especially liked the small square on the back to help identify the various rock layers by color. It helped us keep the canyon in perspective vertically and horizontally. Would buy it again.

Review

Praise for Napoleon by Paul Johnson: “Paul Johnson . . . is a historian at the top his game. His judgments are sure. His historical range is sweeping. His storytelling is crisp and his writing elegant.”—The Baltimore Sun “The selection of the venerable British historian . . . Paul Johnson to write on Napoleon . . . has turned out to be a wise one: Johnson is succinct, critical, and deeply skeptical of the Napoleonic legend.”—The Atlantic Monthly “This is a jewel of a book; comprehensive, brief, and passionate.”—The Economist “Johnson provides an excellent overview . . . [He] presents a concise appraisal of Napoleon’s career and a precise understanding of his enigmatic character.”—Booklist “[A] succinct yet lively biography . . . very readable and entertaining.”—The Washington Post

A very concise and thoughtful overview of the years in which Napoleon dominated Europe in so many ways. I have read a lot previously on this subject, but from mainly a military perspective. This books weaves the military in with the political and personal aspects of Napoleon (and also Josephine of course!) As Johnson summarizes at the end (which I largely agree with), Napoleon was basically an opportunist with an awesome military ability that even the Duke of Wellington stated was the greatest of all time! But he never had an overarching philosophy that would unite his country and other parts of the Empire in the manner that the Roman Empire did.. In the end his tremendous ego and determination to conquer (in some way) the British Empire thru the Continental System was his downfall. He made great contributions to French society in the way of buildings, monuments, and the Napoleonic Code (For example, the code forbade privileges based on birth, allowed freedom of religion, and specified that government jobs should go to the most qualified), but in the end he ended up a lonely man on a tiny island far from any civilization, his home country and much of Europe thoroughly devastated by 20 years of constant warfare.

If you are looking for an introduction to Napoleon, this book serves nicely. Without much detail, Johnson provides most analysis and interruption. Johnson is able to present a unified Napoleon. Some authors succumb to the temptation of description Napoleon as two people - one responsible for his raise and one for his fail. As other reviews note, Johnson takes a fairly negative view of Napoleon. He didn't change, his circumstances did. He wasn't a gifted ruler and his fall was inevitable. His raise can be attributed to aggressiveness and lucky timing. The explanation for some of Napeleon's success is technological. He was a master map reader. Napoleon's battle field strategy was predicated on three tactics: surprise, speed of attach, and point of attack from the rear. His aim throughout his career was to move swiftly to a position where he obliged the enemy to fight a major battle, destroy the enemy's forces, and then occupy his capital and dictate peace terms.Napoleon was also a master propagandist. Napoleon either invented or benefited from the invention of the first modern nation state and the absolute concentration of authority. The army became the state. The modern nation state is capable of total warfare: economic, political, and combat. Napoleon's success was the catalyst that created a rival and ultimately more power nation state, Germany.Quotes:He is the grandest possible refutation of those determinists who hold that events are governed by forces, classes, economics, and geography rather than by the powerful wills of men and women. He needed not a paymaster, like a mercenary, not a disembodied ideal, like a patriot, but a source of power, so that he could capture it and obtain more power. The object of power, in is view, was not only to crush opposition to his will, but more usually to inspire fear, so that power did not need to be used at all.The whole Napoleonic empire was an emergency entity, built to blaze but not to last.A huge unbridgeable chasm yawned between his person and the next man down the chain of command.

Another fine book by Paul Johnson. He answers many of my questions about Europe and its nature following the fall of the Roman empire. What about the Germanic tribes? What about Prussia? Whatever happened to the French revolution? I probably didn’t pay attention in world history, or maybe they just didn’t teach me anything worth remembering. This book has been an outstanding adjunct to my knowledge and understanding of western Europe after the Middle Ages. No wonder my ancestors fled Germany and England in the 1800s!

As Modern Times, the author abuses of his knowledge of future. He atributes to Napoleón responsabilities out of his time. The description of the environment that produced the Emperor is probably the best analyze of the play. A big mistake It's the confussion between Louis and Lucien. Also, It's important the role played by Talleyrand, Fouché and Denian. The reading is easy and very interesting and, at the end, It's a good prologue to «Modern Times»

Perspective rises above other portrayals to illuminate the effective propaganda aggrandizing Napoleon “The Man on Horseback” seeded the rise of 20th century fascist and socialist statism

This brief biography of Napoleon biggest issue is that it is just that, brief. Instead of deviling into the intracacies of Napoleon's battles, rise to power, and rule, Johnson simply reiterates information that would be readily found on the Emperor's Wikipedia page. As much is dedicated to whole companions as is to Napoleon's seating chart for his wedding. While Johnson appreciates the greatness of the man, and writes compelling prose, he fails to capture any detail. A man like Napoleon deserves a bigger biography, I recommend the potential reader find a more complete work.

Iroquois: People of the Longhouse, by Michael Johnson

From Publishers Weekly

An introductory work, this examines the history and culture of the Iroquois Confederacy, a nation that survives to the present. In its day, a significant power, able to sweep aside like so much chaff less powerful groups such as the Neutrals and Eries in the 17th century, the Confederacy dominated its Huron neighbors. Less fortunate in the face of European diseases and the growing numbers of settler colonies, and the victim of ill-fated alliances, the League of Peace and Power nevertheless commands respect. The book covers the history of the Confederacy, as well as its culture, goods and some significant figures in Iroquois history. Johnson, who has researched aboriginal peoples in North America for more than 30 years and wrote The Encyclopedia of Native Tribes of North America, has assembled a lavishly illustrated text. Unfortunately, the emphasis on visual material combined with the brevity of the work means the work can provide only a tantalizing overview of a history that stretches over at least five centuries. This coffee-table book, which includes many beautiful photos of Iroquois masks, clothing and beadwork, is suitable for the casual reader or curious grade-schoolers but readers interested in an in-depth discussion of the Haudenosaunee needs must look elsewhere. A high-quality coffee table production. The book features art, illustration, maps and photos. Mr. Johnson has published extensively on American Indian history, culture and crafts. He compiles his vast knowledge base of Iroquois life ways into this beautifully illustrated volume... I was also pleased to see the inventory of all seventeen Six Nations recognized communities in the United States and Canada, and an inventory of the most common surnames in these communities. This is a valuable genealogical resource when many federally recognized tribes make it extremely difficult to access any genealogical information about their membership. Concluding, this is an excellent title I highly recommend. Excellent book! I discovered that I was part Iroquois and wanted to learn more about the culture. This book gives an excellent history of the tribes that make up the Iroquois Nation, their beliefs, culture, where they lived, etc. I strongly recommend it for anyone who wants to learn more about the Iroquois.

Very interesting and informative. Written recently so it is up to date. Lots of good maps, photos and drawings.

The narrative and the pictures perfectly met my quest for that information. The level of research and its presentation is very well done.In one volume the author presents a level of information that anyone can understand and absorb. The history of the Iroquois could fillvolumes but this volume boils it down so the story is wonderfully told.

Very informative and nice pictures.

Excellent book, lots of good photos and explanations.

Great book of Native Americans. Well presented. Makes a fine gift for those expressing interest in the history and culture.
