A hands-on introduction to FPGA prototyping and SoC design This is the successor edition of the popular FPGA Prototyping by Verilog Examples book. It follows the same "learning-by-doing" approach to teach the fundamentals and practices of HDL synthesis and FPGA prototyping. The new edition uses a coherent series of examples to demonstrate the process to develop sophisticated digital circuits and IP (intellectual property) cores, integrate them into an SoC (system on a chip) framework, realize the system on an FPGA prototyping board, and verify the hardware and software operation. The examples start with simple gate-level circuits, progress gradually through the RT (register-transfer) level modules, and lead to a functional embedded system with custom I/O peripherals and hardware accelerators. Although it is an introductory text, the examples are developed in a rigorous manner, and the derivations follow the strict design guidelines and coding practices used for large, complex digital systems. The book is completely updated and uses the SystemVerilog language, which "absorbs" the Verilog language. It presents the hardware design in the SoC context and introduces the hardware-software co-design concept. Instead of treating examples as isolated entities, the book integrates them into a single coherent SoC platform that allows readers to explore both hardware and software "programmability" and develop complex and interesting embedded system projects. Prior to reading this book, I had not heard of the story of Michael Rockefeller, and his tragic fate, so this story was totally new to me, and i was really excited to read it. The story is fascinating because of the mix of cultures involved, Dutch colonial ambitions, geopolitical historical aspects, as well as the nature of the wealthy, powerful Rockefeller family. The story presents prime fodder for great characters and a great mystery. It will not spoil the story to say that the fundamental question is "how did Michael Rockefeller die?". The book tells the story by jumping back and forth from more recent times during the author's research and back to the time of Michael's time on the island, up until he disappeared, and the ensuing large search effort. The jumping back and forth in time makes some parts of the book challenging. In addition, the book is made more challenging by the difficulty I had with place names and people names. There are numerous locations of importance referred to in the book, but there is not a single map - I wish there had been at least one map (several times I used Google maps on my smart phone). With regard to people's names, particularly the names of New Guinea tribe and family names, a family tree and/or timeline of relatives would have helped the understanding, and therefore the enjoyment of reading. Coupled with the disjointed time structure, the lack of maps and challenges with place/people names/relations, this book is not as good as it could have been. However, I still enjoyed it, and glad I read it, because the coincidence of peoples in New Guinea at this time in history is really interesting. Regarding the question of Michael's actual fate, I left the book no more convinced of any proposed way in which he could have died. I will not say more on this, so I don't spoil it for others - you'll have to make up your own mind.

Thanks to the daily kindle specials I'm offered, I have read many books I wouldn't have searched for. Savage Harvest was a pleasant surprise. There are many good reviews so I won't be repetitive.There IS a map of the villages and I don't see how this book could be written without going back and forth in time. I certainly didn't find it tedious. Quite the contrary, I couldn't put it down. This kindle version doesn't have the option to find out what percentage of the book has been read/remains so I kept going as I thought I must be nearing the end...and it's now 11 am.I'll be in NYC in a couple of months and I'll have to visit the Museum of Primitive Art at MOMA. I read this on an iPad but will have it on my iPhone 6+ so will be able to refer to the book while there. This is an exciting prospect. To actually SEE the artifacts that Michael Rockefeller acquired and see his photographs will be a big thrill. I hope his journals will also be on display.The cover made me think I was getting a book written decades ago yet the book was published in 2014 and Hoffman's trips were in 2012. It was interesting to see that "ramen" is now a major part of their diet. And the references to John who lives between two villages and works elsewhere for money and has adopted a more modern lifestyle (including satellite TV and watches CNN and BBC) was fascinating.Quite poignant was the author's realization that despite the really primitive conditions he felt a sense of kinship and belonging to a community. He talks about how his father left behind his Orthodox Jewish upbringing and Carl and his sister grew up in a small insular household among families with numerous children.If you like non-fiction, travel narratives, and biographies/memoirs genres, then this has it all. Highly recommend.

Hoffman manages to come up with as close to a clear conclusion on the death of Rockefeller as can be made, half a century after others had failed to do so. His patient immersion in Asmat culture yields dividends when he gets the descendants of those who probably ritually killed Rockefeller to almost admit it.The book is particularly fascinating in the way it interweaves the history, politics, and culture of the time, to show how these all converge on an eager, bright, but unfortunate young man. For example, how the "domino theory" of Asian communism led President Kennedy to try to placate Sukarno and oppose the Dutch. How Dutch colonialists, trying to show that the Netherlands were in control of Papua, led them to murder Asmat, which in turn led the Asmat to take revenge on hapless Rockefeller.The book portrays the Asmat culture to us Westerners in a way that helps to understand their world view. I have visited other remote clans in Papua New Guinea and have some understanding of this. Hoffman gets you deep into these natives' culture.I fault Hoffman for his annoying jumping around in time, backwards and forwards over and over. Very frustrating.And the paperback deserves a more attractive cover!A brilliant study. A compelling read.

This book is a thorough investigation into the disappearance of Michael Rockefeller in New Guinea in the 1960's. But much more than that it is a journey into the mind set of the local people and how they dealt with and deal with their transformation from a closely held culture where logical relations between spirits and humans buttress their way of life into a "modern" culture overlain with government, religion, and lifestyles replete with unsatisfactory contradictions. The author seeks not to judge, but to explain. Starting with a murder mystery he ends up understanding a mind set that can include headhunting and cannibalism.

It was hard to stomach the initial descriptions of the tribal rites, at first. Then, the realization of modern factual events intersecting with my own travels in that geographical vicinity made Hoffman's quest more personal. I even had to check my high school yearbook for my Dutch Indonesian boyfriend's picture to "ground" myself into Hoffman's story. Grossly riveting at times, the mystery of Rockefeller's disappearance came to a somewhat satisfying conclusion.

This book is phenomenal. Sometimes less is more, and this book doesn't have over 400 pages but a quarter of that and still crafts Ms. Earhart's biography with articulate precision. The book has a great catalog of pictures that you can't just find on the internet either. The early years of her life are brief but highly effective. Nothing in the book is stretched out for too long but you get a perfect amount of information that keeping the reader on his toes the entire time.

While this book is intended for young readers (words such as "armistice" are defined in boxes set in the text), the text is thorough and nuanced enough to engage an adult reader. The book's subject is well-suited to a pictorial biography, and the well-chosen images are sharp and clear. A Lindy look-alike, Amelia Earhart's wonderful public image combined modest gentility, feminist self-confidence and competence, and a model's poise and grace. Happily, the image seems to have been thoroughly genuine, though the book makes it clear that there were better aviators.

These books are great for my third graders! They use these for their big biography projects and they offer tons of great info!

This documentary gives less about the time Amelia spent in Iowa. It is interesting that she was a nurse, fashion designer, contributor to Cosmopolitan magazine, the New York Herald (title as I recall it) newspaper, aviator, and probably several other activities which I do not recall.

My daughter had to read this book as part of her summer reading. I thought it was a great choice.

My godchild is an avid reader and at 8 years old, she's developed an interest in nonfiction books. I purchased the books on Amelia Earhart because I new she would be intrigued. The book is exactly what I was hoping for and I'm sure she'll enjoy it.

We really liked the pictures and format of the book, surprised that it wasn't bigger.

My granddaughter is a teen and needs to see what great ladies can accomplish. This book is inspiring and detailed.

I needed to add more grains to my diet and wanted some recipes that tasted good enough that I would actually eat them. Fortunately, the recipes in this book have helped me achieve that. An added benefit is that the recipes are incredibly filling so you don't want to eat other things (read: stuff with sugar or fat).I should start off by saying that I already liked some grains (barley, wheatberry and farro are favorites) before purchasing the book. This book is a great intro to cooking with grains if it isn't something you're all that familiar with (I wasn't). There is an introductory chapter that gives you the lay of the land about grains, describes each grain and how to cook with it, which whole grains are gluten free and which aren't and just generally makes you comfortable with the concept of grains. There are a ton of vegan options in the book as well.I've made three recipes from the book - Barley & Pecan Burgers, Spicy Brown Rice Salad w/ Chicken and Peanuts and Farro w/ Nectarines, Basil and Toasted Pine Nuts. All three turned out great and tasted great the first time I made them. The Barley & Pecan Burgers were fantastic and I would happily substitute those for real hamburgers any day of the week (and I really like hamburgers). They were just that good. The book is broken up into breakfast dishes, salads, soups and stews, burgers, casseroles and dinner party worthy recipes.Pros:Availability of ingredients. There are recipes for every type of grain imaginable. I have found many of them in the grain & cereal aisle of my local chain supermarket. You don't necessarily need to go to a Whole Foods or other type of specialty food store to get the ingredients. If you do, that's great but I found wheatberries, farro, quinoa, barley, millet, oats and about a thousand different types of rice just at Pick N Save (the local grocery store). I did want to try Kamut which I couldn't find but just ended up getting that on Amazon. The other ingredients are fruits, nuts and vegetables that you can generally find in your local market. If you can't (nectarines weren't in season at my store), you can easily substitute. I used apricots and the recipe was still fantastic.Ease of recipes. You don't need to be an experienced chef for the recipes. They are very straight-forward and easy to read. No particularly exotic techniques or hardware needed. If you can put the pan on the stove with some water in it, you're pretty much good to go. A food processor would probably be handy too.Tester's Notes. Each recipe comes with "Tester's Notes" that the authors specifically wrote for that recipe. They are little tips and info about the ingredients that can come in handy and are just fun to read. Quite a few give you some tips on how to "cheat" a little such as for the recipe for brown rice that I referred to above. One of the tips was to pick up the brown rice at a Chinese restaurant instead of making it yourself so it wouldn't take as long. There are also "Chef It Up" tips for each recipe that show you how to change it up a little to make the recipe really dinner-party worthy.Potential Warnings:Pre-Soaking. This isn't really a con but if you're looking forward to making a recipe one evening and you didn't pre-soak the grains like the recipe called for, it just won't turn out correctly. In the intro chapter, the authors tell you what grains don't have to be pre-soaked so you can just pick those grains to cook.Cooking time. Again, this really isn't the book's fault. Many recipes call for simmering the grains in water on the cook top for around an hour to get them to the right consistency. I do this while I'm doing other household chores but you should be aware that cooking time can be long so you need to time-manage a bit. Again, there are grains that don't have to be cooked that long and the authors tell you what those are.Pictures. Not every single recipe has a picture. Some do, but not all. If you're the type of cook that likes to see what the finished product is supposed to look like beforehand, that could be an issue. However, all of the recipes I've read are self-evident as to what the finished recipe should look like.Quantity. If you're cooking for one like me, you'll discover that the recipes make more than enough for a dinner of four people. As a result, I'll be halving the recipes going forward. That is still enough for 2-3 meals just for me.One of the indicators as to whether I'm going to keep a book or not is that when I first get it, I sit down and go through the recipes page by page and put post-its on recipes I know I would actually make and eat. Some cookbooks I've ordered only end up with one or two post-its. Those get returned. This one ended up with around 70 post its. It's a keeper!

This is a great cookbook. They include lots of grain recipes that don't try to disguise the grains as meat or something else, it presents them as what they are. I've made 3-4 different recipes and all have turned out well. Even my "man's man" fiance who is a big time meat lover has really enjoyed these recipes. Also includes a nice introduction with some basic information about a variety of grains.

I can't say enough good things about this cook book. I have tried a number of these recipes and loved each one so far. To date, I have made the ones that are quick and easy, like the black bean quinoa burgers that I made for a crowd on a week night. In fact I've made that one a couple of times now. I have a running list of recipes I am going to try, but one of the best things about the book is that it has kindled new ideas and stretched me to to do more things with grains than the normal sides and salads that I've done in the past.

I've tried a lot of whole grain recipes from other sources, and none begin to approach the dishes I've tried in this book (the red rice casserole, the quinoa burger, the millet burger, the spelt berry and tomato salad, and the wild rice biryani). The book compares favorably to other books that do not even attempt to be health conscious. Highly recommend.

Great book that gives some back ground and the proper way to cook all kinds of grains. The recipes are very nice as well. I am taking my time reading this because of the detail that they give. Wonderful book. This one is a keeper. Going to get some of these to give as Xmas gifts too.

This cookbook is full of great recipes that use whole grains. It also introduced me to different grains that I hadn't cooked with before and how to cook them. I have enjoyed exploring these varied grains through this cookbook and beyond.

I have decided to read this one cover to cover and incorporate more whole grains in our diet this year. The only thing so far that is a bit disappointing is that I'm having a hard time finding some of them----barley flakes, soybean flakes, wheat flakes, etc. Living in Wisconsin, we are a bit 'challenged' with nutritious finds at the grocery store but I didn't think it would be this difficult! Pictures are nice, but the actual book is terrible. Just short phrases. No story what so ever. Got this since it's the first Cars 3 book available, better to wait until May for the rest.

While the pictures are cute, this is not a story about Lightning McQueen. It's just a book of inspirational quotes. My 4 yo didn't like it. Returned for a refund.

This story is very cute. My 5 year old loved it and it is our go-to book of the week. A sweet book with a sweet message.

I've used Prometheus a bunch and have met Mr Brazil once or twice at tech conferences. This book is surprisingly approachable and offers a gradual, easy-to-read ramp up into one of the most interesting distributed systems projects to land since the advent of Docker & Kubernetes. The writing is smart, the examples work, and the book fits together as well as the open source project's underlying components. If you want to quickly get up to speed on prom you would be hard pressed to find a better resource.

My daughter is taking an online drivers ed course for school. The online materials are HORRIBLE, so I bought this textbook which is the one they use in school. Since I hope that my daughter will chauffeur me around one day, I want to make sure she’s able to do it safely. The book looked great even though it was used. There were no notes on the pages (she was bummed), but it’s been very helpful so far.

I feel this book should be required reading for everyone no matter if they are trying to get their license or already have it. Sometimes I find myself flipping through this book just as a refresher. Easy to understand. Very detailed with information that you may not know or may have forgotten over the years. Drive safely.
