I've been homeschooling my children for 16 years, and was homeschooled as a child, as well. Throughout this journey, I have not seen a more fun and engaging history text for children than Story of the World. It flows like a story (which is how I believe history is best taught) and doesn't bog down in too many details. I believe it draws students in with the excitement of history and leaves them hungering for more.I do history with all of my children at the same time, so my current students are 5, 7, 10, and 15. They all enjoy these stories, and are able to see how history is not a disconnected, unrelated jumble of names and dates, but a fascinating story that continues to this day.We use this book as one of our "spines" and supplement with lots of other books to expand the narrative (as suggested in the Activity Guide in this series). I read aloud from this book (and series) almost daily. Highly recommended!

PROS: Easy-to-read, fairly engaging, a good mix of history and folk stories, hits most of the big stuff. I like that it's mostly text with relatively few pictures. We supplement with DK publishing histories, which are less thorough and less-well organized, but have great pictures, so that the kids get a good sense of the look of things as well.CONS: Def. Western-centric (though less than some of its competitors), and def. focused more on wars/politicians/history of power, and not much at all on history of ideas, art, philosophy, etc. Due to the breadth of the survey, there's little material connecting what happens in one place and time to any other.Western-centric: Bauer includes lots of material on other cultures, it's true, but most of this is through the lens of Western history. Which is fair. And she does a much better job than most other material for this age group. If you use the book as a backbone rather than a sole resource, it should mostly work out anyway. I found it necessary to also buy a) a more completist survey that I use to supplement or contextualize when random non-Western countries show up in SOTW and b) a full-on history of China. Because Bauer has the kids so engaged with text, I found sources that were comics for these things: Cartoon History of the Universe Volumes 1-7 Gonick's History of the Universe/Modern World series and Jin Lui's Understanding China through Comics series https://www.amazon.com/Foundations-Chinese-Civilization-Emperor-Understanding/dp/1611720273/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1510679206&sr=1-1&keywords=jing+liu&dpID=61JZ4KwqoaL&preST=_SX218_BO1,204,203,200_QL40_&dpSrc=srchChina has always been a tremendous power and has influenced much of history in that part of the world, so the terse coverage it receives in SOTW makes for some problems in giving children a more coherent idea of what happened almost anywhere East of Turkey.History of Ideas: I would love to see the author in future editions make a list of resources at the end of each chapter... suggested art, music, important thinkers, scientists, etc. These are things you see in other courses of course, but as the history series tends to be the backbone for the classical education, it would simplify teaching greatly to find a short list of suggested related topics right in the text. I'm getting pretty good at balancing multiple history book (music, art, philosophy) on my desk at the same time, but I would have love to see these things more incorporated. Or, maybe a secondary textbook on history of ideas and culture? I appreciate the trickiness of organizing such a tremendous amount of information, so perhaps that would be the way to go.

Pros:The greatest strength of this book is that Mrs. Bauer gets to the point of what is significant about the people or events she presents. Many books tell interesting stories, but few tell why they matter. I really appreciate this facet of the book.In addition to history, the author gives simplified summaries of significant myths and literature (e.g., Beowulf, the Arabian Nights). These stories are probably one of our daughter's favorite parts of the book. Our child likes the readings.Cons:In order to give a summary that is simple enough for a child to grasp, many thing must be omitted which inadvertently distorts history, but I don't see any way around that for this level of study.Being a survey of world history, there is no connected narrative. You're in Europe one week and China another. My child finds this interesting, but I wonder if she'll retain very much of what we're studying. I would prefer a connected story of Western Civilization to World History. Conclusion:Our child enjoys the stories and the author does a good job summarizing what's significant, rather than burdening students with irrelevant minutiae. I question how much she'll retain, because each chapter is brief and moves from place to place. However, if she likes it should spark her interest in history as she gets older. We are finding supplemental readings (biographies or historical fiction) for people who I think are interesting or significant, and I recommend that for anyone who uses this book. Two other supplements we are using are Bauer's activity book - the map exercises are nicely done - and the Sonlight "Book of Time," so that we can locate people and events in time as well as place.

We love Story of the World! After using V.1 with our two oldest children, we knew we wanted to keep using the program and bought v.2.The thing I love about this book is that is can be used for so many different age groups and since it is a story book, you can read it over and over again. I love anything that can be used for many children, it saves me so much money in the long run.Right now, we are using this, along with the activity books, for our fourth and fifth grader. We do from time to time, come up with extra activities, if the kids have really enjoyed learning something. The two books combined are a pretty complete curriculum.Story telling can really made history come alive for kids! I highly recommend this program.

Atlas of Adventures: A collection of natural wonders, exciting experiences and fun festivities from the four corners of the globe

From School Library Journal

Gr 3–5—Divided into seven sections that each focus on a different continent, this busy, oversize atlas has an inviting and fun tone. Facts are dispensed on the spreads, and there is no hard and fast organization. While there is an extensive index, this work is aimed at browsers, not report writers. The cartoon artwork is colorful, but the illustrations falter when it comes to people. Limbs are sometimes out of proportion, and people occasionally seem awkward. Animals are better rendered. The endpapers are a delight: the front sheets are covered with monarch butterflies, while the back pages depict penguins, swimming off at the bottom right corner of the spread. There's a "Can You Find?" page toward the end that invites children to look for specific pictures throughout. VERDICT While this isn't an essential addition, it's a fun, lighthearted introductory world atlas.—Anne Chapman Callaghan, Racine Public Library, WI

My girlfriend and I came across this book at a store on our travels and didn't have room in our luggage for a hardcover book, but I went and bought it the day we got home. That's how captivating it was! This book brought me back to the oversized hardcover picture books I read as a kid. The illustration is absolutely wonderful, imaginative, funny, and if full of subtle details that keep your eyes moving across every composition. And as an avid traveler and geography geek, this book covers so many of the world's most unique experiences and places. Whether you've experienced some of these places or just dream about them, you'll feel that youthful sense of wonder and adventure from this book.Oh and if you think it's fun for adults, wait til anyone under the age of 12 gets their hands on it. I have a 2.5 year old nephew who is picking up new words every day, and this book is PERFECT for him to learn with. He is entranced by all the colors, architecture, animals, vehicles and cultural objects. He is learning what different landscapes look like, the names of countries, exotic animals, unique recreation activities, etc. I hope this goes on to inspire his own curiosity about the world! You'll be amazed how a book like this can stick with a child for their whole life.I think this is one book worth owning for anyone who loves adventure, young and old. Parents, take a break from digital entertainment and add this book to your little one's library! It will grow with them for sure!

Beautiful book! My 4 year old attends a Montessori School, and this is a hit amongst that crowd. I showed the link to a few interested moms at a recent birthday party. They immediately saved it to their wish lists. Highly recommend!

This book is WONDERFUL! I'm enjoying it as well as my grands - a granddaughter 7 and a grandson 11. I noted that the book is recommended for ages up to 10, and I must strongly disagree! My grands are in the gifted program , and are enchanted with it as is their 64-year-old GiGi!!!!

This book is pretty cool. I do wish it had more detailed maps though. It has the big picture world map, then a map for each continents but no details such as islands and or capitals or other cities. I also wish it was perhaps bigger - as in that it covered more cool things in more countries. It kind of only touches on a handful of interesting things from each continent and that leaves out a LOT. What they do cover is interesting and is done well. This is from someone who has actually been to a number of places around the world. But as for my young children they will probably enjoy it.

I am teaching an "Around the World" class at our homeschool coop, where I teach 5-7 year olds about the continents and oceans. After getting this book out of the library, I liked it so much that I purchased a copy. The bright pictures and informative text give lots of options - you can skip some of the captions for the younger crowd, use the illustrations to get the kids talking and noticing details, or read everything for a small, focused group.I like the variety of places featured, and the colorful illustrations. I will note that the features include Carnival in Brazil, with some women that are rather scandalously dressed for a kids' book. My husband hails from the Caribbean, and I am familiar and comfortable with Carnival culture and my kids have experienced it firsthand, so we can talk about how things can be considered culturally appropriate for one place and time even if they would be a bit much for another place or people. Depending on your comfort level, you might want to skip this page, or just know about it ahead of time. Many of the pages offer great opportunities for further learning. One page features New Zealand's Haka, and there are some great, kid appropriate videos on YouTube of the haka that are truly spine-tingling. Video or images of Monarch butterfly migration are pretty incredible, as well. The book featured a number of places/traditions I wasn't familiar with, and it has been fun to learn more along with the kids. This certainly isn't a stand-alone geography book, but it is a great supplement. The detailed images provide lots of material for generating interest with your kids and planting a seed for them to want to learn more.

Gifted this book to my 3.5yr old son who is very curious about the world around him and always asking about the location of places. It is the perfect father-son bonding book for any Dad and/or Mom who is into travel or geography) and is always highly requested for a bedtime story (choosing just 2-3 locations from the ‘map’ to learn about each night). Love this book!

This book is GREAT! We do a great deal of traveling and this book is always the #1 choice for my girls (ages 8 and 5) when we're packing up the car. They LOVE reading this book! It's also been the center of attention many nights. I often "catch" the girls including the things they learned in the games that they play, it's so neat! We love this book!

I purchased this as a gift for my 11 year old nephew, and he loved turning the pages and discovering new parts of the world. It was a great gift!

I live in Ohio's Amish country and have a number of Amish friends. I have read several Amish novels and I'm always disappointed because they do not accurately reflect Amish life, religious practice, and social interactions. When I heard that author Linda Byler is Amish, I was curious to read one of her romances and find out if there was a difference. I was thoroughly captivated by this author! I was especially excited to find that her writing is so rich with beautiful descriptions of the countryside and interesting characters drawn accurately from an Amish sensibility. The Bent & Dent store and the banana boxes is spot on! Despite some differences in housekeeping standards, widow Ruth Miller finds a true friend in her neighbor, Mamie Stoltzfus, who loves to cook and eat, is a bit nosy and gossipy, keeps a less than tidy home, and has dingy laundry. Support comes from Mamie and Ruth's Mam who comes to help her freeze a wagon load of Incredible sweet corn (the exact variety everyone in my Amish neighborhood prefers). The everyday life of an Amish woman is described in authentic detail--the wash house and wringer washer, "the buddies" coming to sew school clothes for the children, and the delight taken in small secrets designed to bring joy and sustain others in times of sorrow and need. The book illustrates an attitude of acceptance of trials. Faith is simple and expressed plainly--often in action and only a few simple words. I've observed much the same qualities among my Amish friends. Linda Byler's writing includes interesting details that are true to the way Amish people interact with one another, express their faith, and live their day to day lives. The daily routines, the simple meals, and the everyday products found in Amish homes were reminders of my own experiences when I visit Amish friends. I read The Christmas Visitor in one evening and the following morning. It is beautifully written and tells a heartwarming story of love and acceptance of difficult life circumstances, the support of the community, and the discovery of new love following the loss of a beloved spouse. I would definitely recommend this book. The romance it portrays is communal as well as personal. The simple life it describes is true to the complexity of Amish life, something that is often missing in Amish-themed fiction written by those who idealize, and do not really understand, Amish faith and practice.

This book is such a wonderful loving book. It touched my heart and actually put into my heart of the wonderful love I have had the privilege of sharing for almost 49 years. It brought tears to my eyes and pulled at my heart strings. I recommend any female that has ever felt deep love read this book. This author is such an amazing person. The Amish people have always captured my thoughts.

I loved this book. It is a beautiful story and squeaky clean. It is a great lesson in trusting God with supplying your daily needs and guidance in your life. I would recommend it to anyone.

Linda Byler does a fantastic job writing her books about the Amish. This book was so good I could not put it down. I love reading aout the way of life of the Amish. Great book I recommend it for a good read.

What a wonderful well written Christian romance. Where all seemed hopeless and forlorn due to the sudden death of her husband what was to become of her and her six children?

Lovely book. I'm not big on romance books, and this definitely is that, but this was very sweet and left me feeling good as I read it.

This is a lovely story of hardship, faith in God's goodness and love. The characters are wonderfully real and the tale is heartwarming .

The author did a wonderful job of writing. As I read I could picture everything Ruth, the main character, was doing or having to deal with. Humility and faith abound. I enjoyed this book very much.
