Horror on the seas. Never has there been a more unbelievable tale of men turning into animals. This book should be taught in schools, studied by professionals, etc. It's hard to describe without spoilers. Let's just say one man leads many to do a great deal of evil. Like Hitler on a tiny island in the ocean. It wasn't enjoyable to read, but it was so fascinating I had to keep reading. You have to keep going just to find out what happens! I gave the book to my father and he devoured it quickly as well. After reading this, I tried to read another shipwreck story with mutiny involved, and it paled in comparison to the point where I couldnt even read it. This book will cast a large shadow over all other mutiny books, and turn the volume down on them. Beware!

Although these killings took place almost 400 years ago on deserted islands in a then barely explored corner of the Indian Ocean, the scale of these crimes makes Helter Skelter look like the JV team! The story did actually remind me of the Charles Manson killings, in which another megalomaniacal madman had others do his heinous bidding. The book is very well written and researched, although at times the author digresses into excessive background detail that dampens any expectation that this will be a dramatic page-turner throughout. Nevertheless, it certainly kept my interest consistently enough to successfully coax me into reading the entire book, along with its epilogue. The other issue with this book is just the disturbing nature of the subject matter (I had been completely unaware of this episode of history). Without revealing too much, however, I will simply say that there is a gratifying element of good triumphing over evil that is endemic to the story; not sure I would have finished reading the book if at some point it had become evident that that element was not going to be a part of the story line.

This book is a surprising gem, bringing to life a period of history which not many contemporary authors have paid much attention to.The life and times of the Dutch during the zenith of their influence and power in the 16th century as the premier commercial traders of the world is described in the context of a truly horrible story of mutiny, madness and slaughter.Dash describes life aboard a Dutch sailing vessel of the period at a time in which little was known about nautical navigation. Life and physical accommodations aboard ship itself were a nightmare to all but the wealthiest travelers .Based on extensive research, including ship's logs, the Dutch Trading Company's (VOC) records, memoirs and letters of several principals involved and even anthropological evidence unearthed in the 1960's and 70's, one is swept into a fascinating look at how a voyage of commerce to the East Indies ended in shipwreck, followed by the breakdown of civil behavior among the survivors and leading to the murders of dozens of innocent people for no reason other than to satisfy the blood lust of the leader of a relatively (at first) small number of mutineers. That any of the crew and passengers survived, marooned on a small coral atoll in the East Indian Sea is astonishing. The subsequent rescue of survivors and punishment of those guilty for the slaughter provides a fitting end to this well written sea tale.To readers interested in expanding their knowledge of world History I heartily recommend this book. You won't regret it.

A well researched and well written account of one of the most horrific ship wrecks in history. The wreck itself was a disaster but what some of the survivors did to their shipmates afterward is hard to believe and terrible to read about, even in todays worlds of serial killers and mass murders.Reading this book it's difficult to believe that human beings can commit some of the acts that are depicted. And for no real reason other than to wield power over others. This book also paints a detailed and rather unflattering portrait of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) and it's business practices. While the ship wreck survivors acted the way they did to gain power and survive a hostile landscape, the VOC did it out of pure greed. I'm not sure who comes off looking worse in the end...A great historical account of a dark page in world history, easy to read and informative, it sheds light on a little seen part of history, definitely worth a look.

The title of this book is somewhat misleading, in that "heresy" is the least of the offences committed by the guy. And it didn't really play much of a role in how this story unfolds. But the actions described in this book are indeed shocking, and so depraved, I was surprised I had never heard of it before. What went on after the Batavia sank was so horrendous, it is hard to believe - but it really happened. Anyone interested in Dutch history would like this book. It goes into a lot of detail about the Dutch East India Company and how they did business. Most of the names are unpronounceable, but other than that, it is a most interesting read.

A fantastic narrative of one of the grimmer events of the age of sail. It's something more people in the modern age should read. Currently, there's a lot of misplaced longing for a past that is supposed to somehow be more moral, noble, chivalrous, and such. The reality is that there is no such past. Nostalgia is history poorly remembered. The Anabaptists were as crazy as Al-Quaeda or Daesh. The Dutch East India Company was as corrupt, shambling, and destructive as any modern corporate hegemon. And life was dangerous, full of deadly diseases, crazy people, social prejudice, and superstition. Mike Dash does a good job of turning the various chronicles, records, and recollections of this shocking episode into a readable and accessible story. There's no shortage of extra data at the end for those who want to really get into the details. That's the most salient part: this isn't the work of some crazy novelist, but the horrifying history you didn't learn about in school - a journey into the dark heart of humanity that has gone off the rails. Oh, and do not read this before going to bed.

i hated this book. i have no idea why people praise it so much. i decided to read it because i saw it ranked highly in entertainment magazine. i really tried to like it. i really did.the big problem: i cant tell the two characters apart. the story is from the perspective of two boys who fall in love, but i could never know who is who. like “is this the kid with the ex boyfriend or the kid with the job internship or what?” i never knew. because of this, i never connected to either of the boys. if they died i literally wouldnt be sad. i felt no connection to them.also, arthur (one of the two main characters) is a toxic and jealous person. pretty much all the cheap drama in the story is about how he’s jealous of bens exboyfriend and he’s having himself little pity parties. and ben is always like “sorry” and theres no reason to be sorry hes just feeding arthurs toxic nature.also, the book is sporting so many pop culture references that it feels like theyre shoving it down our throats. maybe i’m just a little biased because i despise musicals and that is much of what ben and arthur obsess about, but they repeatedly mention multiple pop culture things and it gets insanely cringey.the book also moves too slow. it took 200 pages for ben and arthur to start dating. TWO HUNDRED!! THATS HALF THE BOOK!! also, the ending was dragged out and i kept expecting to turn the page and see the acknowledgements but it just kept going, just kept stabbing me again and again.i tried to enjoy this book. i really, really did. i read the whole thing despite being bored the whole time. i actually hoped someone would die so it would get interesting. i wish i had never decided to read it. a lot of people seem to enjoy it, so maybe you will too, but heed this warning. its a terrible book.

“I don’t know if we’re a love story or a story about love.”Right up front: this book brought tears to my eyes at the end. It channeled all the trauma of being a teenager, as well as the joy of coming out at last. The story of Ben and Arthur should be entirely different from my own story – they could practically be my grandchildren. But no, it resonated deeply in me, both as a gay man, and a father.I am intensely cynical when I approach young adult novels from mainstream publishers, particularly when they have gay content. Why? Not sure, but I think it’s because so many mainstream publishers ignore so much great LGBT content, I automatically wonder “why this book?” Is it because it’s safe, acceptable, within received norms as to how much gay is ok?Being a gay teenager in high school in the very early seventies was awful. Nobody was out. Everyone was afraid. My own experience was not technically that bad, but in retrospect, I was as confused and frightened and isolated as any closeted gay teen at the time. The closet was the default for all of us. Of course, I didn’t have books like this back then. I had The Boys in the Band.Albertalli and Silvera create a lovely rhythm with the structure of this book, alternating between the viewpoints of Puerto Rican Ben from Manhattan and Jewish Arthur from ex-urban Atlanta. These seventeen-year-olds are fully fleshed-out, richly dimensional. They observe the world around them closely, and they respond to it. Most importantly of all, they have parents they love (in that eye-rolling teenaged way) and friends who matter hugely in their lives. We see through these boys’ eyes, and we see a lot.The futility of high-school romances is sort of at the center of this book, but I think that’s a bit of a red herring. The interplay between Ben’s wounded cynicism and Arthur’s starry-eyed romanticism is critical to their relationship with each other, but it’s also essential in their relationship to their friends – Jessie and Ethan for Arthur, and the more complex quartet of Dylan, Harriet, Hudson and Samantha for Ben. All these young people need each other but are groping forward in their hormone-infused teen lives to figure out how the different kinds of love – love of family, love of friends, romantic love – are going to be part of them. It is confusing and aggravating and frightening. Which, as I remember if I think very hard on my own high-school years, is exactly right.I want to say that there’s no “happy ending” for this book, but in fact there is: it’s just not the kind of happy ending we as a culture are primed to see in a romantic story. I will give no detail, but suffice it to say that as I ended this book, blinking away tears, I felt hopeful and comforted. Maturity is something I wasn’t looking for in these pages, and its discovery therein was an unexpected gift.

I have a love/ hate relationship with Albertalli. I really liked Simon VS The Homo Sapiens Agenda and The Upside of Unrequited with their adorable characters and charming/ hilarious/ sometimes heartbreaking plots. I soared through these books and would recommend them to anyone- especially John Green fans. Then there was Leah On the Off Beat, which mostly angered me. I didn’t like her, or the way she acted toward her friends, how the love interest played itself out…. the book just pissed me off most of the time, with just barely enough good to keep me moving forward. What If It’s Us Brings out the best of this author- maybe due to the collab? The characters are purely magical even as they are each incredibly messy and neurotic in their own ways. I think it’s their imperfections that made them so fabulous. The premise was fantastic, the play between characters was perfect, and you saw a lot of character growth which is always a plus for me. My favorite character was definitely Dylan, the over the top best friend. I felt like he was the perfect foil for Ben. For me, this was the best book of the author’s to date. I loved it! My only objection, and it’s purely personal, I felt like the ending was too open. I want closure! And I want it to be EPIC. Still, five stars all the way. On the adult content scale, there’s some language, drinking, sexual innuendo and light sexual content. It’s not too crazy, and I would still give this one to a youngish teen. I give it a three.

Buy it. The emotional roller coaster it takes you on is the best ive ever been blessed to read! After finishing all 433 pages in approximately 8 hours, i have to say it has easily replaced another book as my all time favorite.

This was very informative. There are many ways of learning music, and that contribute to our musical knowledge which we might not be aware. In other words, learning an instrument, a technique or a musical piece is not just practice, practice, practice. For goodness sakes, there is much more to it, so don't beat yourself up.

The book is a comprehensive and inspirational treatment of the nature of learning and mastering music, sharing many examples of techniques and approaches of accomplished masters. It explains how the brain learns, and how the mind influences success. There are lots of extras, including web-based material for more inspiration and insights. It's a must read for anyone who is seriously pursuing learning to play a musical instrument (or voice), and worried about whether they're talented enough to master it, or frustrated by a lack of motivation to practice, or fearful of playing before an audience. It will transform the way I practice. Many of its key recommendations are strategies I have been using over the past dozen years learning to play the mandolin, including: playing with others often at meet-ups, jams, and music camps; listening to recorded performances; watching live music; performing frequently as possible; learning from masters; and using tools like iReal pro, garage band, amazing slow-downer, band-in-a-box, and guitar pro. The book affirms that my own approaches are indeed proven and useful practice techniques, motivates me to continue exploring and finding my own way, and provides lots of valuable guidance for making my formal practice time much more effective.I'm going to start using its strategies and approaches right now, and will often refer back to the Kindle version on my iPad for encouragement and guidance.

This is a great book no doubt about it. Having taken up the guitar at 50 I've been overwhelmed by the "what to" learn books, and underwhelmed by the "how to" learn books. Very frustrating!!! This is the best "how to learn" book I've found so far. Lots of great practice and thought provoking ideas. I loved it so much I bought a hardcover edition to replace my softcover copy (which I gave to my teacher). Recommended!

I had my wife buy this book for me. I started learning the guitar almost four months ago. I was and I am using a beginner guitar; beginner books for learning the guitar (including one that was accidently sold to me because it was intended only for those who were enrolled in the retailer’s classes); and free lessons on the internet. I had my wife buy the book because none of those sources addressed how to practice. This book does exactly that. I learned what practice is, its many components, its cognitive reason for being done. I started doing what is in the book and my progress learning the guitar just took off. I refer to it all the time when I want to improve something in my practice. When I improve that part of my practice, my progress takes off again. To put it another way -- this book is like a stick shift transmission in a car. It makes those other learning parts work.Earl “Buck” Hack

Jonathan Harnum has written a great exposition on the many facets of what it means to be a practicing musician. His ideas can apply to improving any skill. I particularly appreciate his explanation of the value of s-l-o-w practice. His book has inspired me to practice smarter, not harder, to receive a higher return on my considerable investment in practice time. As I seek to expand my skill set into as yet uncharted territories, I anticipate more efficient use of my time in gaining and mastering these new skills. A perfect companion and complement to Jonathan Harnum's book is Effortless Mastery, by Kenny Werner. Together, they present a complete picture of the way to achieve true mastery, not just over a musical instrument or, indeed over any specific individual discipline, but over oneself, which is the true mastery.

Great book covering the broader aspects of practice and reminding us that practice does not mean punishing ourselves.Get back to the inquisitive and experimental child experience. Be rewarded by not wasting your time on deflating activities.I have spent hundreds of hours working on my instrument in a non-musical way only to be surprised by my sounding non-musical. As soon as I started to listen and learn from the music that inspired me, the theory and technical side of playing was an exciting stepping stone this end goal of actually making expressive music.Highly recommended.

I am reading (for the second time) the audio book version of Jonathan Harnum's "The Practice of Practice". This is read by the author, and it is a very VERY good discussion of learning, particularly as applied to playing music, but with carry-over to any skill. The book links to a web site with an extensive collection of examples and studies, and I liked it so much that I also bought the paper version, so that I could see the illustrations and use the scannable links. I ENTHUSIASTICALLY recommend this book to all my music-making friends! I suggest the audio book version (Audible) because it has some rhythm demonstrations that are great, and because the author makes the whole topic chatty and approachable. (And I bet you get the paper version, too!)

I bought this book because I practice piano daily. This book gave me great insights into how to structure that. No typical self help cliches, just very original thoughtful and clear writing. It is also about much more than I ever expected. Its about how the brain works, why naps are important, and how to shape good practice. I have recommended or bought this for a number of people who don't play any instrument.

I agree with other reviewers regarding too much filler. Add to that too much name dropping and too many repeated anecdotes. If you distilled the actual practice methodology covered in the book, it would amount to short pamphlet.

This book is useful and also SHORT. I've been reviewing tips between my classes. These guys seem to know what they're talking about. Love it.

This little book can be read in 10 minutes but has a ton of good advice. It is particularly useful as a beginning point for neophytes, who may want to continue their preparation with more detailed offerings on class prep and exam prep in particular. Overall, a good job.

The book gives you a quick overview of things to look out for. A good place to start if you are thinking about law school

A great book offering nuggets of wisdom about the law school process. It's especially helpful for the uninitiated. If you're starting law school in the fall, save yourself some stress and read this.

Great read that offers simple yet specific pieces of advice. It's a short read and a great addition to any law school hopeful's library.

As advertised, it is quite short- perhaps ten minutes of reading. That's fine, but half of the tips are either common sense, not law school specific, or what you can find on any law school related website. Credit the authors for writing it, but even at it's low price it really isn't worth it.

As someone about to graduate law school this year, I found this book to be absolutely on par with every bit of advice I would give to incoming and current law students. The brevity of the book should not undermine the content, but instead highlight the gravity of the wisdom provided. Often books that seek to give advice for grad school are so long that the "survival tips" provided seem optional rather than highly HIGHLY recommended. Those who read this book should read it with the mentality that the pieces of advice in the book are the tried and true, most important things anyone who has gone through law school could pass on and anyone trekking through law school should heed. Ultimately no one ever follows all the great advice in any of these books, but take it from someone who's almost done with school, this will help you do law school as right as you can! :)

Great little book that gives the highlights (and lowlights) of law school life and how to set yourself up to succeed AFTER school is over. Since law school already has more than enough reading, this gets straight to the point and tells you what you need to know!
