I've never written a review for Amazon, so when I clicked on 5 stars and "I love it!" was the phrase, I thought PERFECT! This is an amazing book filled with delicious recipes, beautiful pictures for each elixir, and a wealth of background information to guide you on your journey to better health. Jessica Weston has spent years studying nutrition and food as medicine both at home and abroad. Reaching into this vast repertoire of knowledge and experiences, she has compiled the most outrageously delicious, but healthy tonics and juices for all of us to feast upon.So far my personal favorite is the "Golden Goddess" mango smoothie. I have arthritis, so I already had tried turmeric paste and coconut milk in some another recipe, but while healthy, they didn't engage my palate. It was a medicinal drink. Ugh! But Jessica's smoothie is fit for a goddess. It is as advertised: "yummy and full of anti-inflammatories at the same. . . . and easy to make once. Yes! My new "go to" health drink. Some of the recipes call for ingredients that I'm not familiar with. . . . I haven't explored the Mayan jungles yet. . . but Jessica Weston not only tells you about all the special herbs and spices, but which vendors sell these timeless remedies as well. Her glossary, sourcing and equipment sections at the back of the book provide invaluable information for beginning your journey to better health.I have not gotten into cleanses yet, but for those of you who do, there is a whole section on nourishing and raw cleanses: again with spectacular pictures to go along with each delectable recipe. Whether or not I do all that's suggested with a cleanse, I know I'll be trying the Chocolate Avocado Mousse and Baked Paleo Lasagna somewhere along my journey through this truly inspired book.I've had the pleasure of meeting Jessica Weston, and know that she passionately believes in everything she's written in this book. She lives this healthy lifestyle every day. She radiates positive energy and healing into everything she does. This book is no exception. If you are even remotely interested in becoming more healthy mentally and physically, you need to give Healing Tonics, Juices, and Smoothies a try.Healing Tonics, Juices, and Smoothies: 100+ Elixirs to Nurture Body and Soul

Be prepared for a wonderful reading and learning experience with Ms. Weston's new book! You will love her recipes, which make SuperFresh THE place to go in Vermont. I salivate just reading the recipes...and then the photographs illustrate the yumminess. I especially appreciate her "Helpful Terms" and "Ingredient Glossary". I'm starting to build up some Basic Staples for our fridge. First try-out on our list?.....Super Heroine Iced Coffee. Thanks, Ms. Weston!

This is exactly what I was hoping for - plenty of recipes for various teas, hot/cold tonics, smoothies, and cleanses. I'm going to start with the switchel (ACV tonic) and elderberry elixir. I keep this on my counter for inspiration! Highly recommend if you're looking for something more advanced than basic smoothies but maybe aren't quite at Moon Juice level.

If anyone has ever been fortunate enough to enter the Wonderful Superfresh! Organic Café, they found an excellent spot to find delicious, nourishing, and guilt-free decadence full of love. This collection of potions, elixirs, recipes and information is a sliver of the magic that goes into the deliciousness of the Café, located in the main square of downtown Brattleboro, Vermont. Its highly recommended for all. I'm highly pleased that I took the money out of my wallet and purchased this book. You will be too.

Absolutely LOVE this cookbook. The recipes are clear and concise, accompanied with beautiful photos. I really appreciate how welcoming and unassuming this cookbook is for someone who wants to explore making new healthy drinks but doesn't know where to start. Thank you Jessica for creating an approachable and beautiful cookbook and sharing your passion for food as medicine with the world!

This book is an absolute joy to behold each photograph is stunningly beautiful and each recipe is simple to follow with great explanations of the benefits of the particular tonic or smoothie drink. The author has clearly done her research and brings a significant background in Natural Foods preparation to her topic. A standout first book in a sometimes overpopulated category, this guide is a wonderful resource for people looking to enhance their health with a plant-based diet and utilizing superfoods for healing. I will be using it for my family myself and for clients!

I am so pleased with the purchase of Jessica's cookbook. I made the mint chocolate smoothie and the vegan vegetable lasagna with the cashew cream instead of cheese on top. It was delicious! And, wonderful that it is healthy and low in calories...good for the brain and heart. The cookbook is beautiful inside with lovely pictures as well. It is well worth the price - I'm glad I bought it! Bravo, Jessica!

I enjoy making smoothies, so I was looking for more ideas, and this book is a great resource!

I read a lot of books in this genre - call it "professional self-help." I've spoken professionally a few times now about leadership and communication, and for my most recent one just a few months ago I did a ton of reading research and a lot of it was books like this one. Most of them are mediocre. I began reading The Charisma Myth expecting more of the same, frankly: platitudes, some common sense stuff, the kinds of advice that will only make sense to people who don't need it. I was just hoping for a tidbit or two that would be useful.I don't really gush about things. If anything I tend to be very demanding and therefore very critical. Like I said, I think most books in this genre are essentially useless. The Charisma Myth is a truly phenomenal book. It's so good that I have recommended it to several of my colleagues and it has already changed the way I manage my team and relate to my coworkers. In fact, my first gut reaction when I read it was "I guess I should stop speaking, now, because everything I'd want to talk about is covered in here."Here's the thing: most of these kinds of books give you a few things:1. Platitudes: useless, pithy sayings.2. Random Anecdotes: stories that don't really offer any takeaway you can act on.3. Abstract Imperatives: things like "be a good listener!" If you're not already a good listener that's kind of like saying "Roast Beef Recipe: Get some beef and roast it." It's not helpful - it doesn't tell me what actual specific actions to take. Here's what this book gave me:1. Extremely concrete, specific actions: Every piece of advice about conduct or mindset is accompanied by direct actions to take. When you're in a conversation and find your mind drifting, bring it back to a physical sensation in the present, like the feeling in your toes. That's just one example of many, but they're all things you can actually DO, not abstract imperatives like "be a better listener" or pithy-but-vapid stuff like "smile more!"2. Visualizations: I've never seen anyone push visualization like Olivia does. She makes the compelling point that visualization is something top athletes and actors have known about forever. In my talks I've always felt slightly uncomfortable urging people to do visualizations, but not anymore, not after reading this. She runs through a lot of specific visualizations, and they're immediately useful practices.3. Taxonomies: Of the most useful business and management blogs I read, some of their most useful posts (I'm thinking of randsinrepose.com, for example) are taxonomies. "The five kinds of meeting attendees." "The four kinds of firefighting." Or whatever. These are helpful to me because by enumerating a problem space as a handful of distinct categories they help me crystallize my own thinking about it. Olivia does this when she enumerates the four kinds of charisma. Look, I think I'm a good manager and leader, an empathetic guy and good at my job, I'm not gonna lie, but I'd never thought about it in this way. This was pretty eye-opening to me. I read this part and thought, oh yeah, I've got the "focus" and "kindness" charisma but less of the "authority" and definitely least of all the "visionary" charisma. And that gives me specific things to work on, and a way to understand why I'm better at motivating people in certain circumstances rather than others. To anyone who wants to be more charismatic: to be more successful at work, more able to positively influence those around them, more able to open up and make real connections with others, and just more able to lead a rich and happy life - and I know how this sounds, I swear I don't usually gush like this! - this book tells you everything you need to know. Everything! No other book I've read does that.To be clear, that's like saying Rippetoe's "Starting Strength" tells you everything you need to know to be a very good, extremely strong weightlifter. You still have to do a ton of really hard work! This book doesn't make you magically charismatic. But it gives you direct, specific, applied practices that, if you do them, will make you more charismatic and enrich your life. Of all the pop psychology, management, leadership, and professional self-help books I've ever read, I cannot say that about a single other one.I give this book my absolute highest recommendation. It is absolutely superb. I don't say that lightly.

I'm usually too lazy to write these reviews, so the fact that you see one right here, right now, should be proof enough about how much this book has really wowed me.I got this book mainly so I could better improve my interaction with friends, and the tools I found in this book have impacted my life in such a way that I never expected. Now I recommend this book to anyone who struggles with friendship problems, social situations, business situations, or even self-esteem. I have never expected to learn so much from this book and would recommend it to anyone.

I chose to read this book for a college self-improvement assignment, and it is the best book I have ever read. I swear it's as if Cabane has been studying my thoughts and what happens inside my mind for my entire life. This book has literally changed the way that I think, and I have seen improvements in my Charisma after just reading the first chapter. I do not read often (which I am hoping to change), but I find myself trying to read this book every opportunity I can. The author uses simple language to explain her concepts, and she portrays all of her ideas in logical manners. I was surprised to find the science and biology behind Charisma. A must read! I recommend it to all!

I believe this book is destined to become one of the classics in the self-help and personal development fields. Ms. Fox Cabane has created an invaluable – and extremely practical – new resource for those of us who continually seek to improve our lives and expand our boundaries. The research is solid and compelling throughout, and the author does a fine job in presenting complex ideas in an engaging and highly readable style. Her exercises on visualization, becoming more fully present in conversations, and quieting the mental chatterbox are all top-notch. It's a terrific read, and well worth your attention if you feel you may need a little guidance in these areas. Very highly recommended.

Review

"Bring tissues when you start My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry, but bring your funnybone, too. It’s that kind of book – one that, if you miss it, you’ll never forgive yourself." (Business Insider, Best Books of 2015)“Fredrik Backman has a knack for weaving tales that are believable and fanciful. Backman’s smooth storytelling infuses his characters with charm and wit… a delightful story.” (St. Louis Post-Dispatch)“Every bit as churlish but lovable as Backman’s cantankerous protagonist in his debut, A Man Called Ove (2014), precocious Elsa will easily work her way into the hearts of readers who like characters with spunk to spare. A delectable homage to the power of stories to comfort and heal, Backman’s tender tale of the touching relationship between a grandmother and granddaughter is a tribute to the everlasting bonds of deep family ties.” (Booklist (starred))“Full of heart, hope, forgiveness, and the embracing of differences, Elsa’s story is one that sticks with you long after you’ve turned the last page.” (Library Journal)“Firmly in league with Roald Dahl and Neil Gaiman. A touching, sometimes funny, often wise portrait of grief.” (Kirkus Reviews) "In his second offering, Backman (A Man Called Ove) continues to write with the same whimsical charm and warm heart as in his debut." (Publishers Weekly)“What I admire in Backman’s stories is his honesty and perspective about grief and losing those we love the most. I would recommend this book to Neil Gaiman fans, as the storytelling is fantastic and heartwarming.” (Sun-Gazette)“I can't remember the last time that I read a book where I alternately cried and laughed, and sometimes both at the same time.” (Marilyn Dahl, Shelf Awareness)Praise for A MAN CALLED OVE: “A charming debut…You’ll laugh, you’ll cry, you’ll feel new sympathy for the curmudgeons in your life. You’ll also want to move to Scandinavia, where everything’s cuter.” (People)"An inspiring affirmation of love for life and acceptance of people for their essence and individual quirks. A Man Called Ove is a perfect selection for book clubs. It's well written and replete with universal concerns. It lacks violence and profanity, is life-affirming and relationship-driven. The book is bittersweet, tender, often wickedly humorous and almost certain to elicit tears. I contentedly wept my way through a box of tissues when I first read the novel and again when I savored it for a second time.” (BookBrowse.com)

#2,168 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

I am almost finished with this book and am not sure how I feel about it. I am not big on fantasy and I keep thinking that this book will wrap up with all of the fantasy relating to reality. Many instances of thought provoking points which I like.

This is the best book I've read in a long time! Many, many times I found myself laughing out loud at something granny had done, or at Elsa's view of the world. On the next page, I might find myself crying over the very serious real world problems encountered by some of the characters. I marveled at the imagination required to create the magical world where Granny took the children who needed her, including Elsa. It takes a masterful writer to make the many quirky characters of this book so believable and fascinating. I found "A Man Called Ove" entertaining, but this book far outpaces it in imagination, emotion, depth, and sheer entertainment.

This book was an interesting read with a lot of emotional scenes that tug at your heart strings. Elsa is a seven-year old that is mature beyond her years. Her wacky but devoted grandmother is Elsa's best and only friend. Granny (a former globe-trotting surgeon) fills the lonely girl's world with adventures and stories about the make believe Land-of-Almost-Awake. When Granny suddenly dies Elsa finds that her grandmother has left her a series of letters that must be delivered to the other tenants that live in the same apartment building as Elsa. As written, the letters are apologies from Granny, but they are really a way for Granny to build bonds of friendship between the lonely Elsa and the other tenants in the building. Through the letters Elsa also comes to realize that the make-believe characters in her grandmother’s stories are all based on real people and real events.Overall I found the book a thoroughly enjoyable read. It was both funny and heartbreaking at the same time. But while I loved the middle and the end of the book, I found the beginning a little muddled. In the beginning I found it hard to relate to the wacky almost senile character of Granny, and the convoluted stories about the Land-of-Almost-Awake were confusing and difficult to follow. (I actually found myself skimming the sections about Miamas and the Land-of-Almost-Awake.) But after Granny's death all those random pieces started to come together in a very structured way. (At this point I had to go back and re-read the parts I skimmed). In the end I found that all of Granny's madcap actions had a reason, and all her stories had a point. So a very enjoyable read, just pay attention to all those stories that Granny and Elsa tell in the beginning. They really are important. On a side note there is one thing that still confuses me about the book: What was the deal with the Leaseholds? Why would the conversion from flats to leasehold make some tenants a profit and force other tenants out of the building?

Often one wonders about the prolific genius of authors who sit and create a work like "My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She's Sorry". We stand in awe of this sheer creative genius of the mind: the Harry Potter Series; Miss Peregrine's School for Peculiar Children, and the list could go on 'ad infinitum'. Here we are introduced to a woman in her seventies. I can only describe her as totally weird, and very likely, completely crazy. But there is Elsa, a cute seven year old who has this old lady as her dear friend. And her grandmother. Upon her death, Elsa comes into the possession of a compendium of letters. In each one of these letters, Elsa's grandma has left her explicit instructions of what she must do in the case of each specific letter. The plot unfolds as flowers in the garden open and bloom to the gentle warming rays of the Sun. Fredrik Backman is an accomplished writer, and a wordsmith. You can read his books with pleasure, reading slowly, enjoying the way he has constructed each sentence. And how the characters in the book [even the ones we know cannot possibly exist] are introduced, and then develop into well-formed three-dimensional persons.I thoroughly appreciated reading this novel. It is solid, warm-hearted, well-developed, and I think, will bring you to another level of feeling the entire spectrum of human emotion

This book is different from most books for adults, because it is written from the perspective of a 7 year old girl. Her name is Elsa and she is very smart for her age. Elsa's Mom works all the time and is also very pregnant. So, Elsa spends most of her time with her eccentric Grandmother who lives in the same group of flats. Grandma is a retired physician, as well as a mischievous, fun loving person that knows how to live life to its fullest. Elsa is being bullied at school, which she keeps from most everyone, with the exception of Grandma. Grandma introduces Elsa to "the land of almost awake" where they both escape from reality. Grandma gets cancer and Elsa is left with the job of fulfilling Grandma's request to deliver a series of letters to all of the people Grandma cared about and had, at one point helped in some way. Coincidentally, all of these people lived in the same block of flats. It is in Elsa's attempt to fulfill this request that she discovers herself and finds out a lot more about the people that live around her. And, each of these people have a unique story and history. At times, Elsa seems so much older than 7, going on 8. However, her best friend is her Grandma. This book will make you laugh, cry, worry, and keep you glued to it until the end. It should really be on everyone's reading list! My new favorite author is Fredrick Backman! If you loved "A Man Called Ove," then you will love this one too!
