One of the best book I have read.

In a world where almost everywhere has been explored, it is exciting to read about the world's deepest ravine, almost inaccessible, full of vigin forest, strange plants, and animals, and still not fully explored either by Chinese or Westerners. Frank Kingdon Ward explored it in the 1920s, in what was then Tibet, leaving a stretch of several miles unknown to all but the local tribes. His original book is reproduced as the core of the present one (with some editing of his words to remove comments that would today be viewed as unacceptably racist). There are also accounts of earlier explorations of the region, including the wild borderlands of India to the south, choked by subtropical forests and then populated with violent tribes (this border region is still disputed by China and India). Kingdon Ward was a botanist, focusing on the plant life of the gorge, whereas the new book gives accounts by modern explorers and covers additional aspects, such as Tibetan religion. There are some fascinating photographs: black and white ones by Kingdon Ward and modern color ones. Two I particularly like are the same view of mountains and old-growth forest taken from a cave where Kingdon Ward camped in the 1920s. One is Kingdon Ward's photograph, and the other is taken some 75 years later, with individual trees grown larger, a large glacier melted away, and the treeline higher up the mountains. Recent, separate expeditions by Western and Chinese teams in the 1990s have shrunk the unexplored stretch of the gorge to about three miles. The discoveries of the Westerners are described and illustrated in the book, including a "new" waterfall. Unfortunately, though, politics make an unwelcome intrusion at the end of the story.

I was really looking forward to this book after spending quite a lot to purchase it. However I was then very disappointed to find it had been designed and printed with large blocks of the smallest text I have ever seen in a book. It is actually difficult to read.

I worried that 'The Secret Footballer' would amount to a disappointing gossip book as he revealed all in giving the inside scoop of the world of professional footie. I also worried I would be disappointed because it wouldn't be gossipy enough. What? No names at all (because the author is still playing and wouldn't like his head kicked in). However, the further I got into the book, and the more the various aspects of the sport (fans, managers, agents, etc) were covered in their individual chapters, the more satisfying and well-rounded the read became. Although, to use a term once coined by Noel Gallagher, I have always considered myself a bit of a 'ceefax' about footie, I am just one person in one of the 'aspects': fans. So, what do I really know? Thanks to 'anonymous,' I feel as though I have been given a 360-degree tour, and for that I am appreciative. As for who 'anonymous' is, well... what can I say? My current best guess is Danny Murphy, ex-premiership with Liverpool and Fulham, now in the Championship with Blackburn.

When the Secret Footballer was writing for the Guardian, he was my favourite weekend read - always topical, often personal, going behind the back page headlines to tell the story behind the story. My expectations of the book were high, perhaps unfairly so, but I felt disappointed at the end of it. The longer format & lack of topicality blunts the edge & the book is tamer than expected. A few high jinks here & there - & a chapter by his anonymous agent justifying his existence - did not take me far behind the facade. Ok for an airplane read - & quickly forgotten.

In well written and easy-to-read manner, the secret footballer gives us a glimpse into the craziness of being a Premier League player - a world that is probably further away from everyday life than many of us imagine. From crazy parties and trips to Dubai, to tactics regarding money and contracts, and as an underlying theme all the way: how a young man struggles to cope with all the craziness and remane sane. However, theres not much football talk here, so don't expect to learn much about the game on the pitch - its primarily about life outside.

I expected this book to be something of a defence of the ridiculous lifestyle of footballers. It was really far from it. There were areas in which preconceived ideas were challenged, especially with agents who I had previously thought to be one step below pond-life (they are now maybe a step or two above pond-life to me).It is easy to see how players lose their sense of reality, and from the book I get the impression that the game has changed massively in the last 15 years or so. It was well-written, thought provoking, witty and entertaining. I fully recommend it.

It gives you an insight how football 'really' works and how footballers think about the game, themselves, trainers, managers and more importantly fans... Very interesting to say the least. But as with other modern Football biographies I always loathe the point that they seem to think that they are more important than the fans or the clubs...A must read for every football interested person though...

This is an interesting book for anyone who is into football or follows the premiership. There is lot of speculation on who the secret footballer is, but when I was trying to calculate the footnotes and hints to see who he was, I enjoyed reading some of the 'behind the scenes' for footballers.It's not like the book is breaking ground on information that we have never heard before but the delivery of a first person explaining the highs and lows is very entertaining.I would (and have) recommended this to football fans.

To be honest I was expecting more juicy gossip than was detailed in the book, the book doesn't really tell you anything that a top player's autobiography wouldn't. Being an anonymous author you would definitely expect some naming and shaming of individuals which didn't really crop up. The chapter about the agent is not worth reading, it's just an opportunity for somebody to defend a publicly dogged profession.Nevertheless if you follow the EPL it's an enjoyable read even if it just turns into a guessing game surrounding the man behind the book.

This brief book provides a good introduction to the origins and early history of trial by jury. The author surveys the history of trial by jury, including its roots in Great Britain, its evolution in Great Britain and the British colonies in North America, and its incorporation into American constitutional law.The author compares and contrasts the adversarial system of justice in England with the inquisitorial system of justice that prevailed in much of Continental Europe. In doing so, the author highlights some of the pros and cons of both systems of justice, and concludes the English adversarial system of justice was better overall. The author also briefly discusses how the grand jury developed as a separate institution from the trial jury in Great Britain. Finally, the author reviews the trial by jury experience in colonial America, and its incorporation into American constitutional law.The book is too short to provide a detailed or comprehensive look at the origins and early history of trial by jury. But, it provides a good, basic introduction for anyone interested in the subject.

The excesses of Guantanamo/Iraq/Afghanistan, where juries have been denied, suggest Levy's point is more than merely academic.The discussion of the role of juries in the Revolution seems less convincing, if only because the subject matter is less exotic, and contrary impressions are readily available. Kathryn Butler (MD, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons) is a trauma surgeon who is board certified in surgical critical care and served on the faculty at Massachusetts General Hospital and Harvard Medical School. I am a former hospital chaplain. Heroic measures are often taken despite little chance of patients' overall life improving, and in many cases, they often make matters worse. Medical science has perfected prolonging death, not life. In an insightful book for a Christian audience, Medical Doctor Kathryn Butler sets the record straight with the ugly facts. She lays out the Biblical medical ethics of end-of-life decisions. She is not advocating active euthanasia, but rather a passive approach of letting nature take its course, palliative/comfort care. After reading this any sane person will run and fill out a Living Will/Advanced Medical Directives and appoint a loved one with Medical Power of Attorney. Dr. Butler gives ample anecdotal examples, uses clear/simple language for the layman, stresses the human/emotional factors, and provides Scriptural support. This is a solid book that should be in every Church Library and given to anyone who needs to understand end-of-life options. While there are many excellent hospice centers, I wish this book would spark a movement to allow people to die in their homes rather than the sterile, impersonal, and often scary clinical environment.

Wow -- I am so glad I read this book. It is a very important book to read and discuss with your loved ones. The two things that are so important in this book are the questions the author says we need to ask ourselves and medical professionals who are caring for our loved ones; and the second thing is the explanations she gives of procedures we all think save lives. And yes, they do sometimes save lives but there is always a cost. All of this information is in a small book that is easy to read and very possibly will save you and yours future heartbreak if you take time to discuss end-of-life issues.

It has been some time since it was the norm for the aged and ill to die in their homes surrounded by their loved ones. Now we are surrounded by intimidating tubes and wires and over-worked medical staff.We are intimated sometimes by the terminology and the routine of hospitals and hospice centers.This book helps to cut through all of that and allow each of us to take control of our particular situations.No one likes to think about the end of this life and the beginning of the next but if we feel that we are in control the process may be more spiritual and peaceful.
