About the Author

Merrill Collett was a full-time resident at the San Francisco Zen Center for four years. During this time he guided many people through their final days as a volunteer caregiver at the Zen Hospice Project. He currently lives in Berkeley, California and remains active in supporting the Zen Hospice Project's work.

This ia a wonderful book for anyone who is caring for someone who is dying, be they caregivers for an individual, a volunteer or professional hospice worker. Don't be put off by the word "zen" in the subtitle. It comes from where Collett worked, the Zen Hospice Project in San Francisco and describes a zen approach, a way of being, uniting body, spirit and emotions. There is nothing specifically Buddhist about it.Collett started working there just before the AIDS epidemic hit, so he has worked with all types of people from all types of backgrounds. It is full of practical advice on caring for the patient, from feeding to keeping them clean and dry. As such, it is a really good manual for people who are doing this type of caregiving.Yet it stresses the more affective and spiritual aspects of this care, from listening to acceptance to managing emotions. This can be beneficial for everyone.Having worked through such high stress times as he did, Collett also stresses the importance of the caregiver taking care of him/herself, through meditation, exercise and managing emotions, and growing from this experience. As does anyone writing in this field, he emphasizes seeing caring for the dying as an opportunity, not a burden, a chance to do something of immense importance.
