Review

“A stunning, smart, grounded tale of intrigue in Nazi Germany, so guilty and detailed it feels like true memory rather than fiction. Sarah is an angry, appealing, heart-wrenching hero, superhuman and achingly frail in equal measure. I wish I’d written this myself. Deeply disturbing and chillingly good.”—Elizabeth Wein, New York Times bestselling author of Code Name Verity “I found myself mesmerized by Sarah’s journey into a world of human monsters. Orphan Monster Spy weaves one heroine’s courage through a spectrum of darkness, and the effects resonate long after the final page.” —Ryan Graudin, award-winning author of the Wolf By Wolf duology“Killeen expertly conjures the day-to-day evil of Nazi Germany in this terrific page turner.”—Paul Dowswell, award-winning author of The Auslander"A powerful, bleak, and penetrating portrait of an isolated young woman excelling in unimaginable danger."—Kirkus Reviews

About the Author

Matt Killeen was born in Birmingham, in the UK, back when trousers were wide and everything was brown. Early instruction in his craft included being told that a drawing of a Cylon exploding isn't writing and copying-out your mother's payslip isn't an essay "about my family." Several alternative careers beckoned, some involving laser guns and guitars, before he finally returned to words and attempted to make a living as an advertising copywriter and largely ignored music and sports journalist. He now writes for the world's best loved toy company, as it wasn't possible to be an X-wing pilot. Married to his Nuyorican soul mate, he is parent to both an unfeasibly clever teenager and a toddler who is challenging his father's anti-establishment credentials by repeatedly writing on the walls. He accidently moved to the countryside in 2016. Follow him @by_Matt_Killeen.

4.5 stars, this is a book about world war 2 told by Sarah a young girl who goes under cover in a Nazi border school for girls to uncover secrets. The plot twist is that she's Jewish and is basically a mouse going into a snakes den. This book kind of blew me away. It's unlike anything I've read before. I really connected with Sarah because of how brave she is. She dropped everything in her life to go into the snakes den to take them out and fight for her country. It was so inspiring. It started off kinda slow but I'm actually glad it did because it gave me more time to connect with Sarah and the captain. And then story in general. I cannot get enough of reading about what happened to the Jewish people and I can't and won't stop reading about people like Sarah who stood up for what was right and fought for her people. I really recommend this book.

Set in the beginning of WW II, Orphan Monster Spy tells the story of Sarah, a blonde Jewish 15-year-old who's on the run with her mother in Germany just before the story opens. Instantly, Sarah's on her own and encounters a man who becomes a strange ally of hers--and he also helps her turn herself into a spy. It's a unique book full of surprises and it's a treat to watch Sarah grow into her role. She's strong in the beginning and stronger by the end.The story is quite unique for a WW II book. From what I can tell, it's not really an alternate history so Killeen has to work with the basic facts of the war with just a few tweaks. There's also a lot more going on than a war story. The book is really about something else, which will probably surprise you when you run into it, but still feel inevitable. Killeen addresses the importance of this in his author's note at the end, too.Highly recommended to fans of YA even if you're not a big historical fiction reader.

Most of us have probably heard the old saw, "You can't judge a book by it's cover". Well, it's especially true in this case. While the title is explained in the narrative, I can't imagine a worse one. Had I not specifically been looking for books on espionage during WW II I would have never given it a second look and I would have missed a really entertaining and informative read. It looks like a cheap, gory potboiler and I wish, for his sake, Mr. Killeen had chosen something different, because I think if it had been published under something more inviting his sales might be better. Anyway, I hope people read it.

This remarkable book will keep you reading, wondering, and entering a time machine into the dark days of Nazi Germany but experienced through the mind and body of a kind of genius teenager who is able to do and be a kind of wondrous acrobat, thinker, extraordinary spy and all around heroine. The book is written or should I say surges with manic energy that captivates the reader as it brings new light and imagination into the idea of the possible human in an impossible world. I know that the novel already has a sequel in process and I hope that it will appear much sooner than later.

While not the best, this was a more unique holocaust stories. Some of the language was repetitive but the plot kept me reading.

Wow! can't wait for the next book!

Surviving during a war in a country whose leaders would rather see you dead is a tremendous endeavor. For an orphan in Matt Killeen's Orphan Monster Spy, becoming a spy is her ticket to survival.Fifteen year old Sarah is recently orphaned after her mother was shot and killed at a checkpoint. As a Jewish girl with blonde hair and blue eyes, and her mother's lessons on play-acting, Sarah is able to trick her way to safety as she navigates Nazi occupied regions. When Sarah meets a man, whose accent she finds curious, her future takes on a new trajectory as she becomes a spy for him, as he just so happens to be a British spy with a mission he can't complete alone. In working with him, Sarah enrolls in an elite boarding school as Ursula, where her goal is to befriend the daughter of a top Nazi scientist working on an immensely dangerous bomb. As she learns about the school, the girls, and the higher ranking Nazi officials she's observing, Sarah comes to realize the constant danger surrounding her as she strives to survive.A story of espionage with the perilous background of pre-World War II Nazi Germany, this engaging tale moves at a brisk pace as events unfold. The inclusion of German words or phrases throughout the novel was a good effort to include historical context to the well-researched story, but I found that the method of German word/English word in the text was cumbersome and pulled my attention from the story - even for those who don't read or speak German, contextual clues could have been used to offer the meaning without explicitly stating it. Though intriguing, and the basis of the novel's continued existence, I did find that there wasn't much developed reasoning behind Sarah's hasty agreement to work as a spy for a man she just met. It was an interesting tactic to have Sarah's thoughts function as an internal dialogue between her and her mother, who seems to have been coaching Sarah in her behavior for survival, as it offers a touch of psychological drama to the tension of spying and survival.Overall, I'd give it a 3.5 out of 5 stars.
