I think each of the other reviews make good points. The reason I want to add my two cents is because I just reviewed:Old Handmade Lace, With a Dictionary of Laceanother Dover book, and if you purchased these together (that one for a penny) you'll really be in business as far as identifying and understanding everything there is to know about lace throughout the world and throughout history. Carol Belanger Grafton is one of the most prolific authors of Dover needlework books. Alas! As others point out: there is NO identification of ANY of the 325 photos of the past 400 years. And they are all in b&w. (This isn't that big a deal as the vast majority of lace is white on white.) But this is why you MUST purchase the very inexpensive Old Handmade Lace and work to compare those 225 illustrations to these 325. Think of it as a challenging puzzle. For many of us, the identity of the name of the lace and even the technique or country of origin are not necessary to appreciate the glorious pictures. However, anyone who believes they could actually learn how to make a single example is mistaken. But that's not what a Pictorial Archive is all about anyway.So take this book for what it's worth. While it would be far more helpful if each depiction were identified, that might also push its contents way out of our price range? If you buy this pair of books, I guarantee you'll enjoy hours of happy page-turning.
Just so you know-This book describes itself as a pictorial archive of 325 historic examples of lace. It would be fairer to say it is simply a collection of crisp, detailed black and white photos of lace AND NOTHING ELSE.In other words, there is not one word of identification of the photos. The laces are not named, not referenced by date, source or type.So, if you want to learn about anything about lace, such as the names and construction of different kinds of lace, its roots, development, places where made, etc. etc. look elsewhere.If you simply want to look at images of lace that are cleared and crisper than the internet, then this book is for you.
Unfortunately I didn't realise that Pictorial archive meant no written explanation at all regarding the lace. Therefore it was a complete waste of time purchasing it.
The images in this book are fantastic and have given me many ideas to incorporate into my own work.It does not bother me but some may find it disturbing that there is absolutely no text with any picture. No details given as to what type of lace or where/when it is from.
Could not believe that the author would go to the trouble to include photos and illustrations of so many lace samples, with absolutely NO names, countries of origin, etc.! Hugely disappointed.
I ordered this book in the hopes that I would find something I could use for work. I am a graphic designer. From my point of view, this book is perfect. Every page is filled with black and white, (probably bitmapped) images of lace. Some are art deco in style. Some look more like they are from the arts and crafts style. Some are more geometric. All are intricate. There are about 2 pages of publisher's note focusing on the history of lace. There are 2 sets of alphabets and 1 set of numbers. It was an excellent find for me. Hope it will be for you as well.
These designs are new to me and good for creating new kind of clothing with lace embroided designs. This book is for those who understand...

I had high hopes for this book. Unfortunately the images in it were a bit low res or a bit blurred. I was hoping to scan some of the images so I can use it as decoration in my illustrations. Too bad the quality is not great. 3 out of 5 stars for me.
