I have read all the books in the series and some of them have been so riveting I read them in one day. LJ Ross has never shied away from dark themes but this time it was over the top for me. I could not read any of the Nicola chapters, just went on to the next chapter after. I also skimmed past the graphic descriptions when Ryan and Phillips and Faulkner showed up at the murder scenes. Somehow the violence seemed more gratuitous, or sensationalized. Her descriptions never stopped me reading, before. But the regular chapters of the investigation, featuring all the familiar characters, were grand, as usual, and the tunnel scene was excellent.
I have read the entire series and loved then but this book is really too graphic and gruesome, Story line goes alone well as usual but this wasn't her best book. Went back in time to earlier time and I guess I didn't need to know all this, we all know his sister was killed so that was expected.
I would have that the series went forward rather than backwards
I've read them all and am now starting over with#1-Holy Island. Excellent writings and details have kept me fascinated and wanting more. You will not be disappointed.You are travelling into a different country in your reading thoughts and mind.
If you have read all of the DCI Ryan books, you will know how this one ends. When I realized what this prequel was about, I stopped reading on page 48. LJ Ross is an excellent writer. Too good perhaps. This book is too gruesome and too heart wrenching for me. I couldn’t read it. I will, however, read new works by this author in the future.
Sadly, I found this book tedious. I have never been a fan of 'prequels' and this book is an example of the reason why. As fond as I am of L J Ross (I've read all of her previous Inspector Ryan novels) this story line is just a repeat of previous explanations in her other Inspector Ryan books. I have to wonder if she has reached a saturation point of this hero and, hopefully, she will now find another action hero with a slightly different story line. Sorry L J Ross.
I loved this novel as it answers many questions that the other stories posed for her readers. LJ Ross is one of the best writers of our times. She has a unique ability to grab her readers early and hold them in suspense while thrilling them in an almost unbelievable manner.
Having voraciously read the other 9 DCI Ryan mysteries, I wasn’t sure that a prequel would be as gripping, but it was. More bits and pieces of Northumbria are revealed in each book, stirring up my wanderlust. The prequel also gives us a better understanding of Ryan’s family, especially his sister. Even knowing the eventual outcome from the other books, I couldn’t stop reading. A skillfully told story!
