Review

"This beautiful book quietly and deftly weaves together the tales of neighbors, lovers, spouses, and children to add something remarkable to the ever-expanding shelf of Holocaust narratives: how life continues in its complexity even in times of extremity and distress, and how women's desires--for love, children, dignity, and more--can spark actions whose repercussions will be felt down through generations."                                          - Lilith"This volume is a treasure box of interconnected short stories tracking a saga of a Jewish family's survival, starting in Holocaust-era France. ... Hall's writing style is minimalist perfection, each chapter a self-contained jewel. ... Definitely a welcome and beautiful voice in wartime historical fiction. Enthusiastically recommended."                                           - Historical Novel Society"Heirlooms is powerful and at times heartrending, and serves as a beautifully rendered homage to its author's roots as well as to mankind's cultural legacy."                                          - Summit Daily

From the Inside Flap

Heirlooms is a fascinating series of interconnected stories about members of an extended family of Jews before, during and long after the holocaust, in France, in Israel, in the United States. Different women and men define themselves in resistance, denial and ignorance of history through four generations . . . In some ways the entire book is a meditation on the meaning of family and history.—Marge Piercy, Sex Wars: A Novel of Gilded-Age New York; Three Women Heirlooms is a masterful collection, infused with devastating beauty. Focusing her precise artistry on the chaos of war, Rachel Hall succeeds in animating loss, preserving memory, and adding powerful imaginative truth to the historical record.—Joanna Scott, De Potter’s Grand Tour Heirlooms is an exquisite and thrilling collection. In fearless and incandescent prose, Rachel Hall traces the fragile resilience and quiet horrors of those displaced by war.She happens to be writing about the Second World War, but these are stories that speak to the essential human experiences of exile and loss and survival. Heirlooms captures what it is to be a refugee, and an immigrant, with a delicacy and precision that delights and haunts.—Steve Almond, God Bless America; The Evil B. B. Chow & Other Stories In Heirlooms, Rachel Hall has built an irresistible and gem-lit kaleidoscope, capturing within it the intricate, ephemeral private moments of women and men fleeing wartime violence, neighbors who bear witness or turn away, and children who carry the legacies. Each turn brings another vital angle, another dimension: Hall’s vision crosses borders and generations, through language at once lyrical and deeply distilled.Heirlooms is a beautiful, transporting, and necessary book.—Nancy Reisman, Trompe L’Oeil; The First Desire

I was sucked into this book at the very first sentence and read it all in one sitting. The characters are rich and well-developed and the stories are poignant and compelling. I enjoyed this book so much that I purchased additional copies as holiday gifts for friends and family. This book is a keeper and I look forward to reading it again.

This beautifully written book of short stories follows the story of Lise and the baby she becomes responsible for, Eugenie, as they navigate their way from Nazi occupied France to the United States where Eugenie grows old and raises her own child. Woven into this larger story are smaller ones of the people, like Lise's twin brother, Eugenie's father Alain, who was a resistance fighter in France during WWII. Hall does a wonderful job developing the characters and their interconnected lives, with each story building on the earlier ones. My only warning to future readers is that this is not a book that can be easily put down. I found it to be more of a novel in that sense. I felt invested in the each character's story and wanted to know what happened next. It made for a couple late nights as I tore through the book. After reading the book through once, I have enjoyed picking up the book and rereading a story here and there to enjoy the beauty of Hall's writing and to reconnect with the characters.

HEIRLOOMS is an absolutely exquisite book, each tale an "heirloom" in its own right. The book is technically a collection of linked stories, but it has the forward momentum of a novel. In other words, I couldn't put it down. Hall understands this period of history. She understands people and exile and how how the carnage of war leaves a different mark on each member of a family and ripples through generations. Brilliant. This would be a terrific book club pick.

Heirlooms was an emotional read for me. The settings for each of the stories varied, however the author's style provided an easy transition through the locations and perspectives. It evoked perfectly both the familiar, life in a mid-west college town, and the distant, the Nazi occupation and French resistance. Although short, this book is concentrated and powerful.

Beautifully written. An absorbing set of interconnected family stories. A great read.

I very much enjoyed the writers use of clear and concise language. The life story of this girl and those around her that allowed her live and survive during a very difficult time is well told.Should remind us of the stories of immigrants coming to America today!

The interwoven stories about the ripple effects of World War II are beautiful. I loved this book!

This is a beautifully written book of short stories that read like a novel for me! I read this book very quickly and I want to read it again! Absolutely loved this book!
