Thank goodness there are now authors who appreciate the younger audiences. If kids are exposed to our founding documents early in their academic grades, they will appreciate history more fully as they progress. I wish this book would have been available when I was younger. Buy this and another of my recommendations for students: "The Elementary Common Sense of Thomas Paine; An Interactive Adaptation for All Ages" here on Amazon. I have given copies of both these titles to my brother and extended family, and even donated copies to the local elementary and middle school.

Only two deficiencies I can see. (1) The militia is continually confused with the National Guard - a federal organization that didn't exist until one and a quarter centuries after the Constitution was written. (2) Ms Travis apparently can't distinguish between a restrictive clause and an independent phrase. Considering her task, though, I'm willing to cut her some slack: I'm selling my copy to a mother of two school-age daughters, rather than trashing it.

I have used this book several times for my college classes. I love the fact on the left column of the page is the actual wording of the Constitution and on the right column is the modern day language. Made it so easy to understand.

This excellent and easy to comprehend book is a MUST if you're learning or teaching the constitution. The pages are split down the middle. On the left are the words of the constitution, on the right is a reworded translation for children to easily understand the verbage without changing it's meaning. It is very clear, consise, and NON-INTIMIDATING! After struggling to create an interest in learning the constitution with my 3 homeschooled children ages 9-13, this has been what causes them to proclain History to be their favorite subject. I recommend this book.

I teach middle school Civics. When I heard Cathy Travis' interview on NPR, I ordered the book for my classes that were studying the Constitution. The students loved the book's explanations.

I finished the book in one sitting. This is a terrific product. Well written and very informative. Breaks it down so it's easier to understand! Recommended reading for anyone who needs a little history lesson since it isn't taught very well in the schools now!

Good.

This book is not accurate. I would not recommend purchasing as your children will not be learning accurate information. Their description of the 2nd amendment of the United States Constitution is troubling at best.

This book is the only head and neck anatomy book I'm familiar with, so I can't compare it to anything except a general anatomy textbook that I've used previously. This text has helpful illustrations and photos. I really appreciated the flashcards included in the back of the book. I tore them out and used them for studying, though I wish they had included more on muscles and nerves. The keyword sections of each chapter were not always helpful, there were several technical terms I had to look up on the internet because they were not in the glossary. However, the text itself was rather thorough in explaining anatomical locations and providing pragmatic landmarks in relation to administering anesthesia or identifying sources of infection. It also mentioned certain parts that are variable among the human population, like the absence of the middle superior alveolar nerve in about 1/4 of people. Quite fascinating.Unfortunately, I noticed several errors in the text and on the flashcards while studying. Certainly this happens with any book, but with this being the 5th edition I find it surprising how many I found. At least I learned enough from the book to know when I saw an error!

Really decent anatomy book. This was required for my first semester of dental hygiene school, and it really is one of the better textbooks I've had. Very easy to follow. Also, I love that it has flashcards included in the back!

great illustrations

I rent this book and I was expecting less of what I received.. I was surprised that I receive a new book. Well pleased with my order..Besides that I save money, comparing to another websites..

Great illustrations. Very clear.

Just as described! Thank you :D

My daughter rented this for class. She said it was fine

Review

"The clearest picture we have to date of the post-Soviet landscape."--The New Yorker"A triumph of the art of contemporary history. In fewer than 200 pages, Kotkin elucidates the implosion of the Soviet empire--the most important and startling series of international events of the past fifty years--and clearly spells out why, thanks almost entirely to the 'principal restraint' of the Soviet leadership, that collapse didn't result in a cataclysmic war, as all experts had long forecasted."--The Atlantic Monthly"Concise and persuasive The mystery, for Kotkin, is not so much why the Soviet Union collapsed as why it did so with so little collateral damage."--The New York Review of Books

This book covers a really interesting topic; the collapse of the Soviet Union, and there are surpisingly few other books that cover this topic. The content is very good, so I recommend the book. The major limitation is that the writing is so patchy; it appears to be written by a variety of authors or a single author in different moods such that in parts it is written intricately like a text book; casually, almost like a conversation; and sometimes like a popular book. But I recommend that you buy it and just put up with this defect. The book focusses on the interesting question about how the Soviet Union passed away so peacefully, and although this question is not really answered, it is a a point of central interest to modern history and well covered in this book.

I have read the first two of Kotkin's volumes on Stalin, and I eagerly look forward to the third. I bought this book because I thought he would help me understand the collapse of the Soviet Union. His understanding of the collapse revolves around three concepts: (1) Gorbachev's "romantic idealism," errantly hoping that through perestroika and glasnost the Soviet Union could be reframed around "humanistic socialism," which was said to be Lenin's initial ideal; (2) how this "romantic idealism" undercut the entire power structure of the Soviet Union, because free thought and press challenged the underpinnings of the Soviet Union; and (3) how the former apparatchiks of the Communist party, and others in the social elite, pillaged the State's entire (but outdated and antiquated) economy in the "privatization" of the country's assets. In this historical process, the Soviet Union splintered completely, and Russia, an agglomeration of fifty-some nationalities, emerged from the ashes. Kotkin does a great job describing the economic implosion and catastrophic GDP shrinkage, which was stopped only by a re-collection of legal power by the presidency and prime minister of Russia, our favorite guy, Vladimir Putin.Kotkin is amazed that during the implosion the Russian "power structure" of military, internal police (KGB), and regular police did not also blow inward. While the Army was shattered, Kotkin believes that the command structure remained relatively intact, so that no nuclear armageddon occurred.I enjoyed this book. I also agree with the reviewer that it was harder to read than Kotkin's other books. The concepts of macroeconomic theory and the specifics of the political structures--I found this hard to understand, so I read these sections twice Also, I was not clear where all the newly enriched apparatchiks came from other than a fuzzy "educated elite."

I found the book extremely interesting, thought provoking and laced with meaningful details. Was wonderful to finally get the background story on why the Soviet Union failed and the various actions leading up to it. I had relatives in East Germany during the Soviet occupation and visited there in 1983. I came to understand firsthand how much the East Germans detested the Soviets and how they were completely "under the thumb" of the Soviets. The East Germans would have revolted had they felt they had any realistic means to do so. This book brought together all of my prior knowledge as well as the aspects that I had never known until I had the opportunity of reading about it.

It's a great synopsis of the collapse of the USSR. As other reviewers have mentioned, the writing style is choppy, quickly changing topics. At times the author uses subjective terms without explaining what they mean. Also, he never really delves into the reason that Armegeddon was Averted. Why exactly did the top Soviet brass not rain nuclear hellfire on their crumbling union?I enjoyed reading it mostly, but would be reluctant to recommend it to a friend.

Stephen Kotkin's "Armageddon Averted" is a good, concise history of the Soviet collage from 1970-2000. Kotkin has two themes that he repeatedly touches on: 1) that the Soviet system collapsed from within and 2) that the collapse was remarkably peaceful. Kotkin's work is very good, although at only 200 pages, it is a cursory account of the Soviet collapse.Kotkin focuses almost entirely on the Soviet system's inner workings. He describes how the Soviet system was destined to collapse from within and would have collapsed earlier had oil prices not increased in the 1970s, allowing the Soviet Union to continue to finance itself. Only with the coming of the new generation - Gorbachev - did anyone in the Soviet leadership have the courage to realize that the system must be changed. However, when Gorbachev tried to save the Soviet Union by liberalizing part of society, he set loose powers and forces and quickly lost control of the country. It was at this point, Kotkin argues, that the real miracle occurred: while the Soviet Union had used military force to keep Hungary and Czechoslovakia in its sphere, and had an entire security apparatus that had perfected the police state, the Soviet dissolution was almost completely bloodless. The Soviet leadership (or reactionaries in the government) did not crack down on its own citizens, and neither did it lash out at the rest of the world in either a conventional world designed to foment nationalism nor launch a spiteful nuclear strike. This is a very good book, but it is lacking on details. Kotkin's writes from the perspective of a textbook, making sweeping statements and broad generalizations without much supporting argument. The book also lacks any personal look at the fall of the Soviet Union (other than occasional anecdotes about the leadership), unlike the excellent (but very different) "Lenin's Tomb." Kotkin also completely dismisses any credit to the United States or any other foreign power or policy for the Soviet collapse. Despite these drawbacks, though, this is an excellent book for anyone interested in Soviet/Russian history, modern history, or political science and foreign policy.

"Quebec 1759" is an Osprey Campaign Series entry, and the second Osprey look at the key battle in North America of the Seven Year's War. The book follows the standard Osprey format in presenting a concise account of the campaign. It opens with an introduction and a comparison of the opposing commanders and their armies and plans. Succeeding chapters cover the British campaign against Quebec, leading up to the decisive battle on the Plains of Abraham in September 1759, and concluding with the relief of the British Army in spring 1760, themselves besieged in the captured fortress. The book offers a good selection of period illustrations, maps, diagrams and photographs, and the narrative is workmanlike. Author Stuart Reid spends perhaps too much time on his own opinions about the campaign, including British Commander General James Wolfe's disputes with his own subordinates. In the process, Reid essentially accuses Wolfe of psychosomatic illnesses. A more common explanation is that Wolfe suffered from, among other things, kidney stones, an exquisitely painful and debilitating ailment that can be brought on by extended stress. Worth a look as an introduction to the topic.

While I was reading the book, I was suprised at how little the French side was covered. It was as though the French didn`t even fight, and just let the British bow them over. I felt that a bit more balanced coverage of the campaign would have been better. Having only the colors of the French metropolitian regiments shown as a representation of the French forces was too little. Of all of the Osprey books that I have bought, this one is probobly the one that I am most disappointed in. It was a fair account of the British side, but even that, I found it annoying that the depection of a member of the 13th Regt as a stand in for other regiments in the campaign was a bit off. There are plenty of North American British reenactors of regiments in that campaign which could have been used. I`m currently a Masters student and if I had submitted something like this for a paper, I would probobly fail.

Very useful book describing the battles for Quebec. This is an Army centric overview but I wish there had been more information about the specific roles that the Royal Navy played. This could be described as one of the first joint operations in the last four hundred years.I have visited Quebec City and not much remains of the original site.

Recently I had read "War That Made America - A Short History of the French and Indian War" by Fred Anderson. I was particularly taken with chapter 21 - "The Plains of Abraham". A pivotal battle, two seasoned commanders, events hinge on apparent chance and then both leaders are killed in battle - an amazing story told extremely well. I made a mental note to check Osprey Publications to determine if they have a title related to this battle. My search was fruitful and I purchased "Quebec 1759 The Battle That Won Canada" by Stuart Reid. Utilizing extensive illustrations the author introduces us to the principal French and British officers; provides detailed descriptions of the various forces and their uniforms and equipment. The focus in this book is the military events, who were the belligerents, what equipment they use, where they camped, how many soldiers each army fielded, how many cannons they employed...you get the idea. This is not a geo-political analysis describing why the British traveled to Quebec in 1759 and fought the French. That very interesting story is told in "War That Made America - A Short History of the French and Indian War" mentioned above.Readers new to Osprey titles should be aware all books from this published are similar in size to a National Geographic magazine with a thicker paper cover. The page count of this title was 98 and contained many period artwork and drawing reproductions, several full color painting created especially for this title and 3 double pages maps showing troop placements and battle progress.

While credible in basics, this work does little to fully explore the battle. It is sadly deficient in enumerating the activities and names of French regulars and militia. It does bless the reader with photographs of the fix-bayonet sequence of period British regulars (whatever that has to do with anything). Not equal with other Osprey volumes (René Chartrand's Monongahela for example).

This book is a much better review of the Quebec 1759 campaign. It gives a balanced account covering both sides in detail. Be it a history student, wargamer or military modeller, it gives the information that you would need.

Osprey's Order of Battle series offers considerably more detail than its standard Campaign series format. In Quebec 1759, René Chartrand provides his usual high quality level of historical research, as well as unique insights into this famous campaign that determined the fate of New France. The volume begins with eight pages that provide the strategic background to the campaign and outline the opposing French and British plans. However, the heart of the volume consists of 49 pages spent detailing all the various French and British units that participated in the campaign. Each line infantry battalion receives one full page of coverage, listing its strength, organization and recent history. Minor units, such as the French colonial cavalry, various militias, Royal Marines, artillery and engineers also receive similar coverage. For anyone interested in the Quebec campaign, the order of battle information provided herein will be indispensable. There is also considerable information on the unit commanders interwoven throughout this section. The campaign itself is covered in the final 30 pages and Chartrand's summary is flawless. Many minor logistical and administrative issues are addressed, in addition to the tactical maneuvering. Chartrand's account of the final climactic Battle on the Plains of Abraham is the best that I have ever read concerning that action. A large foldout map of the battlefield is also provided. This is a superb piece of military historical research.
