It's all been said by other reviewers. I'll simply add that I find this map FAR and AWAY easier to read than the Trails Illustrated maps. If your eyes, like mine, are over 50 years old, you may, too. It covers the core of Grand Canyon National Park, at a great scale. Just be sure you review the information about what this map covers, if you're thinking about hiking in an extremely remote part of the Canyon (particularly in parts more than a few miles west of Hermit's Rest). The images provided by Amazon at the top include an image that shows the area covered by this map, compared to the 7.5 minute quads. In addition to the map, this document provides brief descriptions of all the trails (both maintained and unmaintained) so you could use this and not need a separate guidebook.

I really like these maps. This covers the majority of the Grand Canyon trail system and this is the map that the park ranger told me he prefers to see visitors have on hand. Very durable. Most importantly, very accurate. I used Sky Terrain maps last summer in the Aspen/Crested Butte area and was highly impressed. My experience with the GC map did nothing but reinforce that opinion. I think they set the standard in topographic maps. If you plan on doing any backpacking in the GC, this is the one to buy. The maps they give you at the park entrance only cover the amenities and roads at the rim and maps of the park shuttle. This has all the backcountry zones and sites, as well as the more established sites well marked. Great for trip planning too. One side covers the rim/slightly western side of the park while the other side covers the eastern aspects of the park. I purchased it for its full coverage of the Escalante and Tonto trail.

I recently used this map on the Tonto Trail between Grandview and South Kaibab. While it's pretty hard to get lost on the trail — you can only go in two directions, east or west, and the trail always goes through the path of least resistance — there were a few drainage crossings where it was unclear just where to cross and then pickup the trail and the map helped me find the right places. It was always quite useful for helping me plan for the day ahead and its warnings about difficult sections were accurate.

I spent 6 days in the canyon, logging about 80 miles total. This map is awesome! Unlike USGS topo maps, it has pertinent information to individual trails, NPS data and Visitor Center bus routes. I hiked in from the North Rim, spent several nights camping and at Phantom Ranch, hiked up to the South Rim and back down, then exited the Canyon via the North Rim. This map was all I needed because the trails are well maintained. Was always able to triangulate my position using this map. Highly recommended for all but the most demanding canyoneering experts out there.

This 5th Edition map is a very detailed topographic map of the Grand Canyon National Park and Kaibab National Forest . It's 1:40,000 scale provides all the important information you'll need to navigate above and below the North and South Rims. Trail profiles, trail descriptions and difficulty ratings are great enhancements for this water resistant map. I used it this summer and found it indispensable. It is a MUST for any serious Grand Canyon hiker,

I bought this for my 4 day back packing trip in the canyon. I went down the new hence trail and up the grand view. I've used the nat geo map before and it's a good map too but I like this one better. It just seems to be easier to read. Side note, the new hance trail head is not marked at all on the side of the road, there's just a little clearing where the trail starts, it took us a few times of driving past it to actually find it. The map is accurate in describing where the trail head is though.

Nice waterproof and tear resistant materiel. Lots of information and easy to read. Its too large scale for off trail hiking. Since GC consists of cliffs and slots great detail is needed to see the radical elevation difference shown by contour lines. This is hard to see at the scale of this map. Nothing wrong with the map, just don't use it to hike off trail.

This version has so much information packed into a small space, you could plan and hike without anything else. Campgrounds labeled, water sources indicated, distances between points calculated and listed in an easy to read format. On my last hike my friend had the Nat Geo map and I carried this. I could pick out our location just as easily but I also had instant access to additional information. I especially liked the small square on the back to help identify the various rock layers by color. It helped us keep the canyon in perspective vertically and horizontally. Would buy it again.

A very concise and thoughtful overview of the years in which Napoleon dominated Europe in so many ways. I have read a lot previously on this subject, but from mainly a military perspective. This books weaves the military in with the political and personal aspects of Napoleon (and also Josephine of course!) As Johnson summarizes at the end (which I largely agree with), Napoleon was basically an opportunist with an awesome military ability that even the Duke of Wellington stated was the greatest of all time!But he never had an overarching philosophy that would unite his country and other parts of the Empire in the manner that the Roman Empire did.. In the end his tremendous ego and determination to conquer (in some way) the British Empire thru the Continental System was his downfall. He made great contributions to French society in the way of buildings, monuments, and the Napoleonic Code (For example, the code forbade privileges based on birth, allowed freedom of religion, and specified that government jobs should go to the most qualified), but in the end he ended up a lonely man on a tiny island far from any civilization, his home country and much of Europe thoroughly devastated by 20 years of constant warfare.

If you are looking for an introduction to Napoleon, this book serves nicely. Without much detail, Johnson provides most analysis and interruption. Johnson is able to present a unified Napoleon. Some authors succumb to the temptation of description Napoleon as two people - one responsible for his raise and one for his fail. As other reviews note, Johnson takes a fairly negative view of Napoleon. He didn't change, his circumstances did. He wasn't a gifted ruler and his fall was inevitable. His raise can be attributed to aggressiveness and lucky timing.The explanation for some of Napeleon's success is technological. He was a master map reader. Napoleon's battle field strategy was predicated on three tactics: surprise, speed of attach, and point of attack from the rear. His aim throughout his career was to move swiftly to a position where he obliged the enemy to fight a major battle, destroy the enemy's forces, and then occupy his capital and dictate peace terms.Napoleon was also a master propagandist. Napoleon either invented or benefited from the invention of the first modern nation state and the absolute concentration of authority. The army became the state. The modern nation state is capable of total warfare: economic, political, and combat. Napoleon's success was the catalyst that created a rival and ultimately more power nation state, Germany.Quotes:He is the grandest possible refutation of those determinists who hold that events are governed by forces, classes, economics, and geography rather than by the powerful wills of men and women.He needed not a paymaster, like a mercenary, not a disembodied ideal, like a patriot, but a source of power, so that he could capture it and obtain more power.The object of power, in is view,was not only to crush opposition to his will, but more usually to inspire fear, so that power did not need to be used at all.The whole Napoleonic empire was an emergency entity, built to blaze but not to last.A huge unbridgeable chasm yawned between his person and the next man down the chain of command.

Another fine book by Paul Johnson. He answers many of my questions about Europe and its nature following the fall of the Roman empire. What about the Germanic tribes? What about Prussia? Whatever happened to the French revolution? I probably didn’t pay attention in world history, or maybe they just didn’t teach me anything worth remembering. This book has been an outstanding adjunct to my knowledge and understanding of western Europe after the Middle Ages. No wonder my ancestors fled Germany and England in the 1800s!

As Modern Times, the author abuses of his knowledge of future. He atributes to Napoleón responsabilities out of his time. The description of the environment that produced the Emperor is probably the best analyze of the play. A big mistake It's the confussion between Louis and Lucien. Also, It's important the role played by Talleyrand, Fouché and Denian. The reading is easy and very interesting and, at the end, It's a good prologue to «Modern Times»

Perspective rises above other portrayals to illuminate the effective propaganda aggrandizing Napoleon “The Man on Horseback” seeded the rise of 20th century fascist and socialist statism

Excellent book! I discovered that I was part Iroquois and wanted to learn more about the culture. This book gives an excellent history of the tribes that make up the Iroquois Nation, their beliefs, culture, where they lived, etc. I strongly recommend it for anyone who wants to learn more about the Iroquois.

Very interesting and informative. Written recently so it is up to date. Lots of good maps, photos and drawings.

The narrative and the pictures perfectly met my quest for that information. The level of research and its presentation is very well done.In one volume the author presents a level of information that anyone can understand and absorb. The history of the Iroquois could fillvolumes but this volume boils it down so the story is wonderfully told.

Excellent book, lots of good photos and explanations.

Great book of Native Americans. Well presented. Makes a fine gift for those expressing interest in the history and culture.

Though he seems more concerned to replace traditional religious explanations of human origins, I believe his theories are also an attack on postmodern theories of human culture.Essentially Wilson argues that eusociality, or the phenomenon of altruism among some members of a tribe, evolves because of a change from raising young who establish new colonies to raising young who stay in the same nest. This leads to genetic changes allowing for intra-group roles and some elements of the species to sacrifice personal reproduction for the good of the group. Thus, much of the book is devoted to detailing this phenomenon among insects and then following this with a similar speculation on the precursors of Homo Sapiens. The standard arguments for group selection, that it enables cooperative tribes to out-evolve uncooperative individuals, are discussed as well.Each reader can assess these arguments for themselves. Obviously group selection isn’t universally accepted among biologists and Wilson acknowledges that genetic eusociality among humans is arguable as well. But Wilson should be commended for, along with other writers, pulling evolutionary biology out of the ivory tower and seeing the full ramifications of these theories if they became part of the standard curriculum.The one hesitation about recommending this book is that it is more of an essay than a fully fledged work coming in at 125 pages. In addition, it ends abruptly with a reference to a scientific study. It’s not that having a proper conclusion is necessary, it’s that it’s a sign that the book is somewhat rushed and incomplete. I have to admit that after finishing I had to recollect the arguments dispersed throughout the book to make complete sense of it.All in all, however, it’s marked by Wilson’s typically clear prose and makes for a good read as well as an engaging argument. I personally came away less convinced than Wilson that modern biology has achieved a new Genesis but that’s merely a non-biologist’s opinion. Worthwhile reading for scientists, philosophers and anyone who is interested in the origins of humanity.

This is a great book! I have several polymers clay books and this one, by far, has the most detailed instructions for interesting and unusual pieces. I can highly recommend this book!

Awesome techniques in here, lovely pictures with easy to follow instructions great for a new clay artist as well as seasoned folk. I'm no English expert, but when I buy a book I expect it to be mostly error free. Am I asking too much? This book is riddled with spelling, grammatical, and just plain errors in formatting. I would recommend it if you can look past that stuff.

I recently purchased this book to add it to my PC collection which is quite extensive. I was pleasantly surprised to see that there are indeed some fresh techniques in the book, enough to keep you busy and also inspire your creativity. When the United States Air Force Academy began teaching astrodynamics to undergraduates majoring in astronautics or aerospace engineering, it found that the traditional approach to the subject was well over 100 years old. An entirely new text had to be evolved, geared to the use of high speed digital computers and actual current practice in the industry. Over the years the new approach was proven in the classrooms of the Academy; its students entering graduate engineering schools were found to possess a better understanding of astrodynamics than others. So pressing is the need for superior training in the aerospace sciences that the professor-authors of this text decided to publish it for other institutions' use. This Dover edition is the result.The text is structured for teaching. Central emphasis is on use of the universal variable formulation, although classical methods are discussed. Several original unpublished derivations are included. A foundation for all that follows is the development of the basic two-body and n-body equations of motion; orbit determination is then treated, and the classical orbital elements, coordinate transformations, and differential correction. Orbital transfer maneuvers are developed, followed by time-of-flight with emphasis on the universal variable solution. The Kepler and Gauss problems are treated in detail. Two-body mechanics are applied to the ballistic missile problem, including launch error analysis and targeting on a rotating earth. Some further specialized applications are made to lunar and interplanetary flight, followed by an introduction to perturbation, special perturbations, integration schemes and errors, and analytic formulation of several common perturbations.Example problems are used frequently, while exercises at the end of each chapter include derivations and quantitative and qualitative problems. The authors suggest how to use the text for a first course in astrodynamics or for a two-course sequence.This major instructional tool effectively communicates the subject to engineering students in a manner found in no other textbook. A very good introduction to the subject. Many examples are given and several of the questions have answers in the text which makes this ideal for self study.The primary focus is on geocentric (Earth-centered) orbits. Especially the orbits of satellites and ballistic missiles. There are two chapters which include detailed information on Lunar injection trajectories and interplanetary transfer orbits.You will need to know basic algebra, matrix multiplication, trigonometry, and vector mechanics in order to answer the questions. Fortunately, if you had a decent precalculus course in high school or college you should have all the math you need. There is also a nice review of vector mechanics in the appendix.The only flaw I found was that some of the chapters were way too long. The author places all of the questions at the end of the chapter. So when you have a 100 page long chapter that is a lot of information to cover in the questions. If they ever make a second edition I would recommend that they place questions at the end of individual sections rather than have seven or eight sections worth of questions grouped together at the end of a chapter.Also save yourself the trouble and make a formula chart. There are tons of formulas in this book and rather than having to flip pages constantly it is a lot easier to write every new formula down on a sheet of paper. These formula charts will make the exercises flow faster.This book would be perfect for someone who wants to know how orbits work. It would also make a great gift for any Kerbal Space Program fans you know.

I've read a lot of text books in my time. An unfortunate number of them were written by people who, while they may know their subject, are not skilled at teaching. I've learned to be particularly wary of books whose titles begin with "Introduction to" or "Fundamentals of" because they tend to start out with a few pages about the really simple fundamentals, then the rest of the book is completely abstruse. This book is not like that. The authors (Bate, Mueller and White) start from fundamentals and proceed slowly and steadily to build on them in a logical fashion. The book contains exercises that (wonder of wonders) actually added to my understanding of the material. The authors clearly have experience teaching this subject and seemed to have an intuitive grasp of exactly where I would have trouble understanding, whereupon they would offer a little extra extra explanation or some coaching about the math or even (wow) a discussion about the physical implications of a mathematical equation they had derived. This book is exactly what the title claims; "Fundamentals of Astrodynamics." Note that you will need to know trigonometry and some vector math and linear algebra before reading this book.

Version 3.5 allows use of Greek characters in the code, so I can match those in the text.)I initially researched, then decided to avoid certain astrodynamics packages available for the language; because they basically have all the problems solved.What I have used though is the NumPy and SymPy packages, that give units and symbolic functions, such as finding the algebraic form of derivative of an algebraic expression.The best part of this experience has been that the book uses units that I can program in the same fashion. When checking answers, the units print out along with the numbers, so if there's an error, I can see from the wrong units where the bug in my code might be.The book has a handful of errors, as others have pointed out.But one other issue has been that the time frame of the book (I was a sophomore in high school when the first edition was published) is such that precision problems encountered and discussed therein just don't exist.For example, in Section 9.5, page 413, there is a discussion and examples of loss of precision because 'the machine' can only represent 6 significant digits. My Pythonista result for the same example problem shows 16 decimal digits; giving a correct answer where the book predicts a roundoff error in the 5th decimal digit. In all, there are many problems where the answer is different, and I have to just decide that it's a round off problem of the old computer, but not my code.One intuitive connection pleasure has been due to my having been in a US Air Force radar surveillance career field in the late 70s, and the authors spend a bit of time on tidbits like determination of ICBM trajectory from 2 radar sitings (BMEWS), satellite tracking, other things where now I understand what my old radar computers were doing under the covers while I watched and tracked from my scope. (Side note: it was my exposure to computers during my radar days that influenced me to study and get my Bachelors in EE, focused on computers.)Overall, it's been a useful book for learning the basic of the subject, as well as learning a new programming language.

My son's Astrodynamics text book. In a day when college books run $400, it great to get a book for $16. Thank you professor for using such a good book. I even got another one for my husband to read because it is still so applicable in our science world today!

For a beginner this book is both readable and practical. YOu could read the book to get a sense of the history of this material, and then learn the in depth derivations of the mathematics.

Invaluable textbook I used for my astrodynamics class. Even though I managed to get an A in aforementioned class, I can safely say it was one of the hardest A's I've ever had to earn. If you're doing any studies in spaceflight, this book is a must read.

This book is super helpful. Just keep in mind that sometimes units need to be converted because it still uses the U.S. stupid measuring units in this book. *sigh* They should just stick to the metric system. Other than that it's awesome.
