As a Friend of the unprogrammed species I have long wondered why we even bother to talk to Evangelical Friends. To my surprise and delight I discovered that Barclay in this day would probably be classified as an evangelical, a fairly modern scripture follower, but a definitely "Jesus Saves" kind of guy. And since in his time he was accepted as having captured the essence of Quakerism, I found it necessary to take a new and more positive look at my evangelical roots. I am still what I was, but now much more open to finding meaning in our evangelical counterparts. (Which means at seventy-seven I can again say what my grandmother used to say.)But even more, my unprogrammed self was also strengthed by Barclay's clear exposition of what it means to Worship, and his clear understanding of ongoing revalation and the voice of the Spirit.All of this is in a "translation" of 17th Century English that unmuddles the message. Bright and clear, in summary, that is my review.

If you know what this is, this a respectful, scholarly version, which sensibly modernized the language. I did enough comparisons with the original to be satisfied the meaning is preserved. The Friends evolved organically a way of Christian Spiritual living. Barclay masterfully wrote it down. This and the Bible are the basis of my own spiritual practice.If you are looking for a comprehensive scripturally sound guide to a mature Christian life, you could do worse than the Apology. Ordered this title through Amazon's used book and for the moeny spent the book is in excellent condition with no problems. I have ordered through them before, new and used and never have had any issues.

Good Experience

Freiday's book is condensed, garbled, and misrepresents Barclay in significant ways. It has very good footnotes, and more importantly, it has section and subsection headings, which Barclay's original lacked.If you can only have one, do not buy Freiday's book. Buy the Quaker Heritage Press edition of the original text. Then buy a pad of Post-Its and start flagging pages.If you can afford two, buy the QHP original to read, and Freiday's version to explain the esoteric references.There's no point in reading a shortened and twisted version if you want to know what it was that Barclay thought. Barclay is not hard to read. He is certainly 17th century wordy, but Freiday's watery interpretation doesn't do the trick.There were passages I puzzled over for years in Freiday's book that became crystal clear when I read what Barclay actually wrote.

I'm afraid I have to take issue with the previous review stating this edition of Barclay's Apology is useful for nothing more than its footnotes. This book was my initiation into the study of Quaker theology, and just as there's a place in the world for translations of the Holy Bible other than the KJV, this book occupies an important place as well. For those not familiar with early English vernacular or others concerned with gaining knowledge with which to "debate," this book is a blessing in that it gives one an overall view of the essence of Quakerism. Does this edition contain errors in its translation? Perhaps, but I'm not a theologian so I can't address that. It's the same argument I hear regarding translations of scripture.My bottom line is this -- it's a wonderful starting point or refresher for anyone who wants a better understanding of who Quakers are, how they strive to live, and what they believe. And as a Quaker, I'm confident the Light can illuminate and guide past any minor issues of clarity.

My rating is not of Barclay's work but of Freiday's "translation" which has many serious flaws, from outright omissions, with no explanation, to completely wrong word choices, like changing "want" as in "lack" to "desire". For many years there was no alternative... since 2003 there has been, published by Quaker Heritage Press. In that volume the appendix discusses in detail the problems with Freiday's work. It's not sold on Amazon, but can be had from the publisher, and is available online.[...]

I have been a Chicago BlackHawks since I was ten years old. I am now a retired 71 yrs. old, and still an avid BlackHawks fan. When I first started following the BlackHawks in 1957 it had mostly to do with the original six history of the NHL, but also about this time the BlackHawks changed their uniforms drasticaly from the barber shop horizontal striping of red and white on black to the basic red sweater with the proud Indian Head on the chest. over the years it has been fine tuned to today and is proudly the most beautiful team sweater in all of sports. Early on it was difficult being a fan of the BlackHawks because they annually finished in the cellar of the standings or very near to that. In 1961 my patience and tolerance was rewarded when Chicago won the Stanley Cup. Because Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita were in their early 20's at that time I envisioned many more cups for my Hawks. This never seemed right because the Hawks in the 60's and early 70's were the best team in the NHL and the two aforementioned players were the best players in the league. I finally pieced it all together about the time the team ran Hull out of the league by cheaply rewarding the two stars less than commensurate salaries. Coming from a dysfunctional family myself, I recognized what was going on with the Wirtz's and how they ran the team. In reading Bryan Smith's outstanding coverage of what went wrong, I recognized all of the characterisics of dysfunction that I encountered in my life and felt that I finally understood the underlying problems which dictated the failure of the team year after year. This book was so interesting and truthful that I wished it would have been another 500 pages. It is not only a great synopsis of my beloved BlackHawks, but also therapeutic for me personally.

A long awaited inside look at the history of the Wirtz family ownership of the Chicago Blackhawks. Very candid and revealing insight into the complexity of running a successful business and sports franchise.

I bought this as a gift for my husband who usually only reads newspapers. My husband used to work for Judge and Dolph, the liquor company owned by Rocky Wirtz. He is also a Blackhawk fan. He brought the book with on vacation and loved it. He found it easy to read and fast reading.

The detail and insights author Bryan Smith brings out deliver a truly thorough and gripping experience for all sports fans to enjoy.

Well written and entertaining. I think that when it comes to the running of the Hawks, Rocky shared a lot. This book confirmed all the "Dollar Bill" theories of many long suffering Hawks fans.

The rehabilitation of the Blackhawk brand is nicely merged with the dysfuntion of the relationships of Rocky Wirtz with his late father and siblings. Fascinating history of one of the high profile names in Chicago sports even though this is more than a sports story. A very enjoyable read.

About the Author

Linda McCartney (née Eastman) was born in New York in 1941. She took a photo course with Hazel Archer and studied art history at the University of Arizona before settling in New York City, where she began her photo career shooting rock portraits. Outside of her photography, which has been exhibited in over 50 galleries worldwide including the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, the National Portrait Gallery, London, the Bonni Benrubi Gallery, New York, and the International Center of Photography, New York, Linda McCartney is known for her passionate animal rights activism and her staunch vegetarianism. She wrote cookbooks and founded her own brand of frozen vegetarian meals, all the while raising a family, continuing to take photographs, and participating as a Wings band member alongside Paul McCartney. She died in 1998 at the age of 56.

An amazingly detailed book about this railroad. The train ride itself is well worth it and I'm glad we didn't opt for the bus ride back down. You just can't see everything on both sides of the train at once. The book traces the rails mile by mile from Durango up to Silverton, using the mile markers by the track. My only complaint was I wish there had been more photographs showing these specific points. The photos were clearly pre-digital and didn't show up as well as they might have. Sometimes it is hard to figure out what mountain she is talking about. That's when a photo of the specific peak would help.The book includes a wealth of detail about the construction of the train, the design feats that enabled track to be laid along an almost sheer wall, and the wars between the various companies competing for the ownership of the route.In some of the more expensive train cars, narrators explain what you see as you go along. However, we opted for the cheap seats and then spent 90% of the time on the open-air gondola, so we couldn't hear anything anyway. So the boo was invaluable.

I purchased "Cinders' and Smoke" for an impending photography trip to SW Colorado. I specifically wanted to get pictures of the trains amid the aspens. I found the book extremely helpful in knowing where we were as we traveled up to Silverton. I hope to someday hike part of the trip with my camera and take pictures along the way. The details in this book are sufficient to make such a trip possible. There is now a newer version of this book which I also purchased. The route details are much less shown and described but the color photographs make it more of a "picture" book. Both books are really good. when talking with the workers employed by the owners of the train I was repeatedly told that they preferred the "Cinders and Smoke" book over the newer version. I think it depends on what you are looking for. I would personally recommend either one but really liked the detail in this book because of the maps that showed the route the whole way. The new version has very limited maps. If you like trains and especially an exciting ride then this book is for you. Just a suggestion, the trip is a long one and I would recommend perhaps taking the train up to Silverton and returning by bus. We were totally exhausted upon our return by train. Finally, buy some clear glasses at the station for $3 before boarding the train. the Cinders and Smoke can really irritate the eyes!

I was born in Durango CO, 69 years ago. Moved to Pasadena, CA when I was 4 yrs old. Have ridden this train twice in my life. I got hooked on model trains in 2016. I joined a model train club, and am in the process of recreating the Durango to Silverton course for my own HO scale display.

Great guide, more informative than the version sold at the depot (which I also bought) with regard to engine, coach, and milepost history. Also a lot of geologic info. I was sad to learn the author died as I have used her guide books since I was a kid.

Cinders and Smoke by Doris B. Osterwald describes the important sights along the Durango & Silverton Railroad. Excellent color pictures of Durango & Silverton trains and beautiful mountain scenery. The book has an index as well as contents page. Excellent book.Robert Wilhelm

Excellent description of this railroad, it's route and it's history.

A concise guide with lots of information on the Durango and Silverton Railroad. A must for all serious railfans. You can follow your journey mile by mile and read up on the history of the railroad.
